A zeitgeber is a term used in the field of biology and circadian rhythms to refer to an external cue or time signal that helps regulate an organism's internal biological clock and synchronize it with the 24-hour day-night cycle of the Earth. The term "zeitgeber" is German for "time giver," and it describes any environmental or external factor that influences an organism's circadian rhythms.

Examples of zeitgebers include:

1. Light: The most potent zeitgeber for most organisms is light, especially natural daylight. Exposure to light in the morning helps reset and synchronize the body's internal clock, known as the circadian clock.

2. Temperature: Daily temperature fluctuations can also serve as zeitgebers. Many animals and plants have temperature-dependent biological rhythms.

3. Social cues: Social interactions and activities, such as mealtimes, work schedules, and social events, can act as zeitgebers, helping to regulate an individual's daily schedule.

4. Exercise: Physical activity at specific times of the day can influence circadian rhythms, especially when coupled with exposure to natural light.

5. Meal timing: Eating meals at regular intervals can act as a zeitgeber, as the digestive system has its own circadian rhythms that can affect overall bodily rhythms.

6. Noise: Auditory cues, such as noise levels, can influence an organism's perception of time and contribute to circadian regulation.

Zeitgebers play a crucial role in maintaining the alignment of an organism's internal biological clock with the external environment. This synchronization is essential for various physiological processes, including sleep-wake cycles, hormone secretion, and overall health and well-being. Disruptions to zeitgeber cues, such as shift work, irregular sleep patterns, or travel across time zones, can lead to circadian rhythm disorders and various health problems.
