Today we got ourselves a notion to discuss a film that holds a special place in our hearts; the underrated Disney Animation classic, A GOOFY MOVIE (1995). We found this film to be surprisingly earnest and incredibly vulnerable, reminding us to take a moment to listen to each other's hearts and bringing us on a journey of understanding. Whether it's relating to our parents, standing out amongst our peers, or just trying to be cool, we all just want to be seen. While maybe not the most epic Disney film of all time, despite the name, A GOOFY MOVIE lived up to its millennial cult status due to its genuine sincerity, and just a touch of goofiness. Not to mention a sensational soundtrack!

We're taking a risk this week as we explore a film that has personal significance to us both; the 1983 coming-of-age sex comedy, RISKY BUSINESS. Beyond some of its more iconic moments (I'm lookin' at you Old Time Rock and Roll scene), Risky Business reminded us of the times we've taken risks in our own lives, or sometimes more poignantly when we didn't. Is simply taking risks the answer to all our problems? And if so, which risks do you take? When is it worth the risk? Or is this all just an over-romanticized lie made up by films like this one? It's hard to be sure, but as Miles says, "sometimes you gotta say 'what the f**k.'" So, let's give it shot.

In this week's episode, we are, "putting our souls at hazard," in our relentless pursuit of the hidden meaning within NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007). The enigmatic Anton Chigurgh, played masterfully by Javier Bardem, casts a foreboding shadow over the entire film as his seemingly unstoppable tirade rips through the story leaving dead bodies and more questions than answers in his wake. Listen as the ideas of order vs. chaos, free will vs. fate, and the weight of wisdom knocked us back like a psychopath wielding a cattle gun.

Ricardo and Seth find themselves wading into the deep end of comedy this week as they parse through the farce; A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988). This Oscar-nominated heist comedy spearheaded by Monty Python legend John Cleese, submerges its audience thoroughly into a comedic tradition not oft experienced by filmgoers at the time. Through fast-paced dialog, physical comedy, and sight gags, A FISH CALLED WANDA connected with its audience and found massive success. However, what lies beneath all the main characters' lying, back-stabbing, and double-crossing? Other than $3 million in diamonds? As always... SPOILERS AHEAD!

In this episode, Ricardo and Seth dive in to the drearier side of cinema by exploring one of the most highly regarded horror films of the last 10 years, Robert Eggers's, THE WITCH (2015). This "elevated" horror goes to some pretty dark places, exploring themes of oppression and repression, moral corruption, and the true meaning of what it means to be a "sinner." THE WITCH is heavily influenced by religious themes, Puritanism and Christianity in particular, and so it's impossible to discuss the film without touching on these subjects. However, within all the theological overtones, Ricardo and Seth find themselves grappling with their own faith, the nature of the soul, and where they themselves may be susceptible to corruption, because who wouldn't want to live deliciously?

In this episode, Ricardo and Seth revisit their childhoods with this 90's live-action adaptation of a 60's cartoon, GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE (1997). While the conversation ran a little shorter than usual, Ricardo and Seth discovered a sweet center underneath the obvious slapstick of this children's film. Not to mention, a few moments to fawn over the extremely hunky Brendan Fraser. :)
