A proposed ordinance change would alter the definition of a “family” renting a house zoned as a single family home. The current ordinance defines a family as no more than 2 unrelated people. The proposal–which passed unanimously in the plan commission earlier this week–would allow up to 5 unrelated people to rent a single family home.

Alder Patrick Heck, who represents district 2 and is a sponsor of the change, joins us on A Public Affair to break down the reasons why he sees is as necessary.

Then we talk with Kori Schneider Peragine from the Fair Housing Council about the role of zoning laws in creating segregated housing.

We also hear from a caller who voiced opposition to the change, pointing to a website created by Neighbors from S Mills in the Greenbush Neighborhood.
