What's the Difference between a Constitutional Monarchy and a Republic?

Australia has a system of constitutional monarchy, but the idea of an Australian republic has been around for nearly two centuries. What is the difference between the two ideas? How does a republic work, what would the powers of the president be, and what would a republic look like for Australia?
