What's Your Mount Rushmore?

Mount Rushmore of Music Videos 📺

Like most Gen-X kids, we grew up in the era of MTV. You were just as likely to discover a new song by your favorite band on MTV as you were on the radio. If a band wanted to sell a lot of records, they had to make a decent video. And some bands & singers made GREAT videos.

Most of the artists we talk about in this episode are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is that a coincidence? Did these videos help to drive their success? It's quite possible. If you remember the golden days of MTV in the 1980s and 90s, you'll love this walk down memory lane. Enjoy!

Canada is more than just our neighbors to the north. More than one of the closest allies to the United States. More than producers of great hockey and maple syrup. They are also some really nice people! Wouldn't you agree eh!?

Some of the picks on our lists are pretty obvious. While others may leave you surprised that they were even Canadian. Some of our choices have been Hollywood legends for decades! As Mark suggests in the episode, go grab yourself a cold Molson or Labatt's Blue and settle in for a fun episode that honors our friends from the Great White North. 🍁

Mount Rushmore of Unbreakable Sports Records 🏀⚾

Sports are full of records. Single game records, season records, career records with hundreds of possibilities in between. Some records are broken every year. But others are so amazing, they just seem absolutely impossible to break.

For this episode we decided to only take one record per sport that we felt will never be broken. And we left every sport on the table, not just the so-called big four sport leagues of the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL. This made it fun and also challenging because we both agreed that we'd easily find multiple unbreakable records in the game of baseball alone.

We each have a pick that falls OUTSIDE of those big four leagues and one of our records has stood for more than 83 years! Will it every be broken? We don't think so. Listen to find out what that record is along with the rest of our picks.

Mount Rushmore of Slasher Movies 🔪

For the week of Halloween 🎃 we decided to do something a little... scary. For some reason, humans love a good scare. Well, not every human. Mark admits right up front that Slasher movies, and any movie with a good jump scare is not his cup of tea!

That made it the perfect episode for us to bring in a guest host to help us out. Susan Hanson is one the biggest horror movie fans we know. She's seen most of them and has a real appreciation for that movie genre. She also happens to be Jon's wife! This is a fun episode, revisiting some scary moments from our youth. And for good measure you'll even get a good shower story from Mark!

We brought 13 party people in to each give us ONE song they would choose to get a party started. Then at the end, Mark and Jon build their own Mount Rushmore of Ultimate Party Songs using ONLY the songs given to us by the party guests.

This is a fun episode with some fun characters! Give it a listen and be sure to share with us YOUR Ultimate Party Songs.

We are honored to be joined by our friend, the always entertaining Blaine Fowler from the Blaine & Lauren show on 96.3 WDVD in Detroit! Blaine is a longtime radio personality who we knew from OUR radio days when he still worked in Minneapolis. He is a big fan of movies, just like us, so was an excellent guest for this topic. In addition to a few impressions, Blaine brought some awesome movie picks to this week's episode!

Science Fiction movies have made up some of the biggest summer blockbusters of all time. Going all the way back to the early days of Hollywood. And we include many of those monster hits on our lists, as well as a couple you may not think of right away. No need for 3D glasses! Just grab a good pair of headphones and some popcorn. Hope you enjoy this episode!

For this week's episode we were joined by our friend Kelly Jordan, the morning show host from Wild Country 99 radio. In this special episode we're sharing our Mount Rushmore of One Hit Wonders. Kelly has worked in radio for more than 20 years and is the perfect guest for this topic!

Some bands and singers are lucky and talented enough to have hit after hit over the course of many years. While others have one big hit, then fade away into obscurity. But those one hit wonders are often more memorable than songs from artists who had a dozen hits. And the songs are all three of our lists are perfect examples. You should know most of these songs very well... even though Kelly was completely unfamiliar with one of Mark's picks!

For this week's episode we welcome our friend Chris Shaffer, the chief meteorologist for WCCO TV in the Twin Cities. We worked with Chris back in our radio days when he was a radio DJ before he made the jump to TV. When we came up with the idea for this episode we immediately thought of Chris as a guest host. When you're talking about Natural Disaster Movies, who better to have join you then a TV meteorologist! Who also happens to have appeared in a Hollywood blockbuster himself!

Americans love an epic, big budget, edge of the seat disaster movie. Going back to the beginning of motion pictures we've loved watching people on the big screen overcome some kind of peril, and Hollywood has delivered some pretty amazing examples.

Our movie choices span more than 75 years! Between the three of us we have some obvious choices and a couple that WILL surprise you! Grab your popcorn, hop in comfortable chair and buckle up for a wild ride!

We grew up watching professional wrestling, first in the early AWA years in Minnesota and then the rise of the WWF through the '80s. But neither of us has really followed wrestling since we were kids so we thought the best way to honor our early love of the "sport" would be to do a Mount Rushmore of Old School Wrestlers!

For us old school means the guys who were there in the beginning of Wrestlemania. The guys we'd see on Saturday mornings, sitting in front of the TV. The larger than life personalities and the larger than life men! If you're a Gen-Xer you'll appreciate these lists!

Saturday Night Live, also known simply as SNL is launching it's 50th season in the fall of 2024. We decided this is a great time for us to list our Mount Rushmore of SNL Skits. We both grew up watching Saturday Night Live and are so amazed at the talent that has passed through those doors.

Starting with the early days of Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray to the '80s greats like Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal and Martin Short. Move into the '90s and you have the cast that featured Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade and Chris Farley, which led into Kristin Wiig, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Pohler and so many more.

How do you choose just FOUR skits from 50 years worth of episodes?? It wasn't easy! But we did our best. Give this episode a listen and let us know what you think.
