  • I Just want to Understand You

    I Want to Understand You

We all want to be understood. We want people to hear our hearts, recognize our struggles, understand why we respond the way we do, and see the things we may not always know how to explain. But what happens when we turn that same desire toward the people in our lives?

Jesus shows us that understanding someone often requires more than simply saying, “I understand.” It requires getting close. It requires listening. It requires patience, vulnerability, difficult conversations, forgiveness, and sometimes choosing to stay engaged when walking away would be easier.

Jesus did the hard things to understand us. He entered our world, experienced rejection, dealt with betrayal, listened to broken people, confronted difficult situations, and ultimately gave Himself for us. He didn't love humanity from a safe distance—He came near.

In this lesson, we explore what Jesus teaches us about relationships and the difficult work of truly understanding the people we love. If we want to love like Jesus, are we willing to do the hard things necessary to understand others?

Sometimes the question isn't, “Why don't they understand me?”

Maybe the better question is, “Have I loved them enough to try to understand them?”
