On this episode of the Where In The Park Podcast, we continue our walk down the entrance corridor of Universal Studios Hollywood, uncovering the real-life Hollywood buildings that inspired the park’s facades.
From the Art Deco details of the Jack Pierce Makeup Studio and the Laemmle Hollywood Apartments to the Thalberg Talent Agency and the Spanish Colonial Revival influences near Laemmle Court, we’re connecting the dots between the theme park and the historic architecture of Hollywood Boulevard.
We compare Universal’s design choices to real locations like Bullocks Wilshire, the Hillview Apartments, the Attie Building, and the Hollywood Pantages Theatre — breaking down the architectural styles, hidden references, and subtle storytelling built into this 2016 expansion.
You may walk this street every visit… but after this episode, you’ll never see it the same way again.

In this deep dive around World Showcase, Amanda explores the rich history, layered storytelling, and architectural inspirations behind one of EPCOT’s most iconic pavilions. From the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair to early EPCOT concept models, government negotiations, and the artists who shaped its identity, we uncover how Mexico became the first stop around the lagoon.
Inside the pavilion, we examine:
• The composite pyramid is inspired by Maya, Aztec, and Toltec civilizations
• The real-life San Ángel Inn in Mexico City and how it influenced the restaurant at EPCOT
• Talavera tiles, Mariachi Cobre, and the layered colonial plaza design
• The original attraction El Río del Tiempo and its “Three Cultures” narrative
• The transformation into Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros
We’ll also explore the work of Imagineers like X. Atencio, Eddie Martinez, Ray Aragon, and a young Joe Rohde — and how authenticity, tourism, and storytelling intersect inside this pavilion.
Next time you walk into Mexico, you may see it a little differently.

How did a 19th-century engineering marvel become one of the most surprising thrill rides at a Disney park?
In this episode of the Where In The Park Podcast, Kevin takes us on a journey from the invention of the wheel in ancient Mesopotamia to the massive Chicago World’s Fair Ferris Wheel of 1893 — and all the way to the swinging gondolas of the Pixar Pal-A-Round at Disney California Adventure.
We explore:
• The origin of the Ferris Wheel and George Washington Gale Ferris Jr.
• The engineering rivalry to outshine the Eiffel Tower
• The rise of Coney Island’s Wonder Wheel and the eccentric sliding gondola design
• Disneyland’s early (and short-lived) Ferris Wheel experiments
• Why Pixar Pal-A-Round is technically not a traditional Ferris Wheel
• How Disney California Adventure’s version became one of the most thrilling attractions at any Disney park
From World’s Fair innovation to seaside amusement parks to Pixar Pier, this episode uncovers how history, engineering, and theme park design all come together 160 feet above Paradise Bay.
Whether you ride swinging or non-swinging… you’ll never look at this wheel the same way again.

After exploring the history of LEGOLAND, we’re continuing the story with someone who helped shape it firsthand.
In this episode of the Where In The Park Podcast, we sit down with D. Mark Snell, a veteran theme park attraction designer who served as the lead attraction designer for LEGOLAND California while working at Jack Rouse Associates.
Mark shares what it was like designing a brand-new theme park from the ground up—how the partnership with the LEGO Group worked, where inspiration came from, and what made designing for LEGOLAND different from any other project. We also reminisce about growing up around theme parks, classic attractions, and the experiences that shaped Mark’s creative career, which spans projects for Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, and more.
If you’ve ever wondered how theme park attractions are designed, how creative constraints shape great ideas, or what it’s like to bring a park like LEGOLAND California to life, this episode offers a rare behind-the-scenes perspective.

Popcorn is one of the most iconic snacks at Disney parks—but have you ever noticed the tiny figures inside the popcorn carts, quietly turning the drum?
In this episode of the Where In The Park Podcast, Amanda dives into the charming and often-overlooked history of the Roastie-Toasties—the miniature “workers” found inside popcorn carts at Disney parks around the world.
We trace their origins all the way back to late-1800s popcorn and peanut roasting machines, explore how the original Tosty Rosty Man played a crucial role in building trust with customers, and uncover how Disney adopted and reimagined this detail as part of its immersive storytelling philosophy.

Next time you grab popcorn, you may find yourself stopping for more than just the snack.

Before EPCOT had pavilions, festivals, or a lagoon lined with countries, it was something entirely different.
In this episode of the Where In The Park Podcast, we’re laying the groundwork for a brand-new monthly series by diving deep into the history of how EPCOT came to be—and why half of the park is dedicated to the World Showcase.
From Walt Disney’s original plans for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, to decades of annual reports, leadership changes, abandoned ideas, and major pivots, this episode traces the long and winding path that led to the EPCOT we know today. Along the way, we explore early concepts like International Street, Little Europa, permanent World’s Fair ideas, and the moment when EPCOT officially stopped being a city and became something else entirely.
This episode sets the stage for what’s coming next: a pavilion-by-pavilion exploration of the details, stories, and design choices that make World Showcase such a unique place to wander.
If you’ve ever wondered why EPCOT feels different from every other Disney park, this is where the answer begins.

Christmas tree, we explore not just what happens during the holidays—but when these traditions began and who helped shape them.
This episode is intentionally focused on Disneyland Resort only. The holiday histories of Walt Disney World, international Disney parks, and Disney Resort Hotels will be covered in future episodes—along with a dedicated deep dive into Haunted Mansion Holiday.
If you love Disney details, park history, and understanding the stories behind the magic, this one’s for you.
