It is the dawn of the French Revolution when masses of hungry peasants burn the chateaux of aristocrats throughout France. After the death of his estranged family, an 18-year-old nobleman, the Marquis Marcel de la Croix, is forced to raise the royalist banner, despite his own revolutionary leanings. The wreck of his family fortress becomes a bastion for newly disenfranchised aristocrats, and Marcel and his fiery associate, Pierre Lafont, lead a rebel group called the League of the Star.
After a bitter falling out with Lafont, Marcel escapes to England incognito, hoping to put the past behind him. In England he encounters several French emigres: the large, brutish former soldier, M. Tolouse, the haughty Mlle. de Courteline, and the sheltered Mlle. Vallon. As these traveling exiles are forced together, a young boy in their company begins to intrigue them with a mysterious tale of love. Can a simple love story, begun merely to entertain the weary travelers, hold the key to Marcel's fate?

Not all vengeance is exacted by the living.
In 12th-century Japan, Yamabuki, a woman samurai 17 years old, travels deep into the Oku wilderness.
Along a lonely road, at a forgotten inn, she seeks shelter, warm food, and cold saké.
But as darkness falls, she ends up fighting for her life, and she finds that there are terrible things under heaven that no weapon can vanquish, and that her only way to survive is to heal that which cannot be healed.

The start of an exciting new series
There are two selections here, both starring the same character, Yamabuki, a female samurai in Japan at the end of the turbulent Heian era (around 1175 CE). One is a stand-alone short story - Cold Sake - while the other, Haru (Spring), is the first chapter in a longer book about Yamabuki. I loved them both, and eagerly await the next publication.
Katherine Lawrence writes with a very strong sense of place, of time, and of character. Yamabuki rides alone in both of the selections, apparently depending on her own wit and ability to survive. Japan seems to be fragmented at this time - there may or may not be a recognized emperor; and the common people, local law enforcement and aristocrats she meets may or may not recognize and honor her status as an Imperial messenger. She's more than up to the task, though what it may have already cost her is not yet known, or what it may cost her. It's clear she has a back story, and the author has given us some information and some hints - an early life in the Imperial Court, perhaps a map-making patron, a high-ranking birth family. I want to know more.
At the end of the first chapter, it's clear that Yamabuki is out very far from the Imperial Court, both geographically and emotionally, on a mission to find and perhaps kill a new unknown sword maker. This gives the narrative an added impetus - why is she out here alone? What are her allegiances? Why was she sent? Did she come on her own?
Interestingly, even though Yamabuki doesn't believe in them, it's clear that there are real gods and real supernatural beings in her world; and it seems likely that she will be thrown in with them whether she believes or not. In Cold Sake, she survives the attack of a vengeful female spirit, but does she believe, or does she think it was all a dream?
The Pillow Book of Lady Sei Shonagon is well known. Lawrence has named the Yamabuki saga, the Pillow Book of a Samurai, and includes a pawky little story explaining why Lady Sei Shonagon called her book the Pillow Book. I can't wait for the next installment!
A thoroughly researched and unique story in the genre of Japanese historical fiction.
The Japanese tradition is long and complicated, with subtleties that are truly hard to capture in a work of extant fiction. However, Katherine M. Lawrence does a wonderful job of it. Peppered throughout "Cold Sake" and "Haru" are little details like using the old calendar (Year of the Monkey, for example), and translating the tongue-twister names of people in the pre-modern era so that their inherent meanings can be gleaned even by readers unfamiliar with the language.
Doubly impressive is the character Yamabuki herself, deftly crafted and executed on the page and throughout the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
On a winter day in 1988, history professor Bob Weddell visits a cemetery in western Tennessee. He meets an elderly man who tells him things witnessed there decades ago. A sinkhole swallows Weddell and his truck into an unexplored cave. Following what he believes to be a passage to the surface, he finds himself in 1862 with a group of Confederate soldiers. Invisible to all, he hitches a ride on a supply wagon to the Confederate camp at Corinth. He witnesses General Albert Sidney Johnston planning the attack on the Union Army 20 miles away. Weddell later travels north, slipping past sentries to Pittsburg Landing.
He locates General Stephen Hurlburt, eavesdrops on conversations, views documents, and finds his 19-year old great-grandfather, Henry. The Confederate attack April 6 is a disaster for the Union Army. Professor Weddell follows Henry throughout the two-day battle as Union troops retreat, then advance. The commentary regarding the hell-on-Earth fight can only be told by a witness to the slaughter. Weddell accompanies his great-grandfather and comrades both nights as they check dead and wounded, the latter expressing thoughts and feelings to one another. Weddell can only be seen by mortally wounded men.
Following the battle, Weddell witnesses General Grant addressing his troops. Through a mishap he finds himself in a river swimming for his life. His return to 1988 is filled with the doubts of even the people close to him about the veracity of his tale.

    A good read!
Here's a romantic adventure story, simple and poetic, absorbing and compelling. The intrepid female protagonist goes through the destruction of family and village, then through the dystopia of an autocrat's palace, to an uplifting experience of a kind of spiritual and physical eco-utopia. As she grows, she changes from sad but indestructible survivor to an ingenious devious young woman able to manipulate her oppressors, to, finally, a powerful and heroic actor able to throw in her fate with chosen others. She has blossomed, like the flowers she loves.
For a taste of the style of this work as adventure narrative, consider:
"The Heir Apparent would have ... no one who would be at his side at all times... as would Hannibal, the young [African] prince turned devoted, loyal servant, eight-year-old spy for the Palace and Monastery courier."
But for the frequent and pervasive depth of psychological insight, consider:
"...anxiety, the soul screaming that came from war, and the mind-bending sleeplessness that hovered in the white light of the Siberian midnight."
A riveting and beautifully written story
This is a compelling and luminous story, with a riveting milieu (Russia on the cusp of the revolution) and a clever interleaving of magical realism within that historical context. Aline's story, from rural village to the glamorous intrigues of palace life in St. Petersburg to the mysterious monastery in Siberia, is a world you want to live in. The textures of daily life, and the creative yearnings to create beauty that fuel Aline's inner survival, are poetically and lovingly detailed. Truly a memorable tale.
Well-crafted prose and a unique perspective
Carley weaves historical facts and magical realist fiction to bring the turbulent times of Russia in the early 20th century to life. With a cast of characters including Rasputin and the Dowager Empress, the author gives us a heroine who is driven to express herself creatively, to do the right thing, and to survive.
I have really enjoyed Siberian Iris
I have really enjoyed Siberian Iris. It is imaginative, compelling, and poetic. Reading it is a wonderful encounter with the colorful, subtle, and heartfelt mind of a real thinker! Thumbs up to Lauren Carley!

A life in the spotlight will keep anyone hidden.
Julia Pastrana is the singing and dancing marvel from Mexico, heralded on tours across 19th-century Europe as much for her talent as for her rather unusual appearance. Yet few can see past the thick hair that covers her: she is both the fascinating toast of a Governor's ball and the shunned, revolting, unnatural beast to be hidden from children and pregnant women.
But what is her wonderful and terrible link to Rose, collector of lost treasures in an attic room in modern-day South London? In this haunting tale of identity, love and independence, these two lives will connect in unforgettable ways.

    A remarkable novel..
I listened to this story over 14 hours, which is the length of the unabridged version on Audible, I agree thats a remarkable length of time but, it must be said, I was never bored, and in fact, I eagerly looked forward to my listening periods, when in the company of narrator, Helen Johns, I entered Julias world. The narrator really gives this story an added dimension, her story telling skills are very good, and her ability to give each character their unique voice ensured that they all came truly alive. However, it was her interpretation of Julia which will stay with me for a very long time. She captured the horror and the degradation and the downright eccentricity of Julias world to perfection. I appreciate that the power of this remarkable story is largely down to the words that the author has so competently written, but for me, this narrator really gave the book its heart and soul.
Orphans of the Carnival is a remarkable novel and is definitely a story that will stay with me for a very long time.
Good insight into attitudes of the period
The main story line was fascinating, especially as I know now that it was based on historical events, but the secondary (modern) plot line was irrelevant and annoying, with an awkward tie-up at the end. The narrator was great, with so many different accents that it was easy to follow who was talking
    Drawn out
Initially engaging and intriguing, the narrative soon becomes repetitive and long-winded as we are we are told over and over again how people react to the heroine's peculiar appearance and how she dances and sings and and travels... chapter after chapter sounds pretty much the same as the story inches along... and the parallel story, set in modern times is just as slow and drawn out and is taking an absolute age to show any connection other than a doll owned by both characters... I'm about three quarters of the way through and I'll finish it out of sheer stubbornness. The book could've used some tightening, condensing and stricter editing... there's a good story in here but a lot of padding. Fine performance by the reader, good range of voices.
    makes you think about prejudice
It was weird how it jumped about in places. The characters were interesting and there was a lot of pathos.
    A 'Must' read!
I loved this book. The narrator certainly brings Julia to life in this 'food for thought' book.

Or even Venezuelan?

Annoying that audible had the authors surname as Aset instead of Aslet.
A very British stiff upper lip tale of a forgotten part of the Great War. Interesting more for the characters rather than the plot. Aslet brings alive the attitudes of the time, including the class ridden and racist nature of the British Empire ( Johnny Bulgar!).
An enjoyable listen which was enhanced by Jonathan Keeble's excellent narration.

Sir Hugh Corbett returns in the 18th novel in master historian Paul Doherty's brilliant series.
Summer, 1311, and Sir Hugh Corbett has taken up a life of danger again....
After his recent unveiling of a devious assassin, Sir Hugh Corbett has returned to service as the Keeper of the Secret Seal, begrudgingly admitting that his appetite for adventure has once again been whetted.
Summoned to meet the King to be congratulated on their work together, Corbett and Ranulf learn of the death of Corbett's close friend, Ralph Grandison. Ralph, a leper, has been found dead in a rowing boat, a dagger thrust through his chest. But this murder is not the first of its kind.
Other patients of the hospital in which Ralph was staying have been similarly slaughtered, and it seems as though the lepers, all former knights of the Royal household, are being targeted. The discovery that Ralph was killed by no ordinary weapon but a poison dagger that once belonged with the Crown Jewels before being famously stolen leads Corbett down a complex path where the risk of disease plays out against the backdrop of finding an assassin who will use any means necessary to kill.
As Corbett puts himself in the path of extreme danger, will he survive to see another day?
