Publisher's Summary:
From the Edge of the Cliff: Understanding the Two Phases of Recovery and Becoming the Person You're Meant to Be provides addicts with practical lessons on how to understand and successfully navigate the two phases of recovery from drug and/or alcohol addiction. However, it is also a remarkably touching, real-life story of someone who has used these same lessons to maintain 28 years of successful recovery. This audiobook contains an entire section on the hazards of drugs prescribed by physicians not well versed in addiction recovery. Listen to information about the dangers of using "legal drugs" that may sabotage your recovery and trigger relapse. It is rare to find in one book the combination of an instructive, addiction-recovery resource and an unfettered look into the world of the "addict next door".

Encouragement and hope; Recovery is available - Easy to read lessons of inspiration
As a health teacher for many years I witnessed students from dysfunctional families struggling with a family member's addiction or leaning towards their own addiction. Dawn Obrecht's, "From the Edge of the Cliff" is a must read for teachers, coaches and others working closely with vulnerable populations. As teachers we care to make a difference; Obrecht's easy-to-read lessons will raise your own awareness about addiction and recovery so you can be a support, not an enabler to those in need. As Obrecht states, doctors can be part of the problem but so can teachers be misguided.
I also recommend public libraries to buy a copy of her book so those who made the choice of recovery, but may not have the means to purchase her book, can borrow from their local libraries. This book speaks to those along their journey of recovery and also helps their loved ones to better understand recovery.
A story of salvation for the addicted person and their family.
If you know someone with an addictive disorder, this book is an outstanding tale of how successful 12-step programs can be to the addict. AND, it will help the family that struggles with that person to understand that the addict must embrace the program and make it part of their daily life - FOREVER. Addicts treated (and mistreated) with medication and/or counselling only succeed in recovery about 6-7% of the time. 12-step programs have a success rate of over 25%. We struggled with a daughter who is/was and addict for over 20 years. 2 of my friends who are child psychiatrists encouraged 12-step programs as the most successful program over all the other treatment modalities.
Live the good life!
I immersed myself into this book as soon as it arrived and spent all my
spare time for the next few days absorbed. What a great tool for anyone
who wants to learn how to live the good life! Although I have 21+ years
of living clean and sober, I learned/re-learned many lessons.
The "miracle" part of the story is the timing of the book release!
Right after I read the chapters about how too many doctors promote
addictions, I had a phone call from my very troubled sister. Her adult
life has been one failed attempt after another to find peace and release
from depression and anxiety. Reading the discussion of risky
prescription drugs was like opening up her medicine cabinet.
