    Publisher's Summary:
Wry, dry, and arch, this production of Lewis Carroll's classic tale of a fall through a rabbit hole to a fantasy world is otherwise just as familiar as ever. After a century and a half, Alice's adventure in Wonderland, one of the finest examples of literary nonsense, continues to attract listeners.

    Good rendition of the classic!
Fascinating to hear the old text without the distraction of pictures! And who could have envisioned back then that we could listen to this while at the gym, or *what's a subway*? I like the ponderous way that Chekijian narrates this one, as this allows the listener to enjoy the flights of fancy so much more!

    Publisher's Summary:
The delicious, biting wit of Saki's short stories satirizing Edwardian high society are some of the funniest and most delightful of exquisite literary miniatures. In this third volume, there are 21 glittering examples.
Saki was the pen name of Hector Hugh Monro. He was born in Burma in 1870, where his father was a senior official in the Burma Police. From the age of two, he lived with two maiden aunts and his grandmother in Devon, and was educated in Exmouth and at the Bedford Grammar School. Later he travelled in Europe with his father. He joined the Burma police, but resigned after a year because of ill health and returned to England where he began his writing career as a journalist and short story writer for magazines and newspapers. Saki is regarded as a master of the short story.
At the start of the First World War he refused a commission, enlisted as a private, and went to France where, in November 1916, he was killed by a shot to the head, his last words being "Put that bloody cigarette out."

A beautiful volume of Robert Browning's poetry
One of the things that gives me great pleasure is to unwind at the end of a long, stressful day with a volume of poetry, anything from the older classics to more contemporary volumes. I'm a great fan of Elizabeth and Robert Browning's poetry and was delighted to find this handsome volume of Robert Browning's poetry in the 1979 The Easton Press edition, which is part of The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written series. The series is known for its high quality and attention to details, evidenced in the genuine leather bindings, gilded edges, moire endleaves, and a satin ribbon page marker.
There is a brief introduction followed by poems organized under the following headings:
    Lyrical Poems and Dramatic Lyrics
    Dramatic Monologues
    Quest, Illusion, Faith
Appendix - Notes, Index of First Lines, Index of Titles
The archival quality, acid-free paper ensures that this book and the rest in the series will endure the test of time, and makes this edition an heirloom-quality book that will enhance the library of any collector.
    Has all the classics
Browning's most famous poems are in here and the ones that he is known for in the literary world. Introduces Dramatic Monologue to poetry scene in Victorian age.
    Five Stars

    Publisher's Summary:
Paula Power, the daughter of a wealthy railway magnate, inherits De Stancy Castle, an ancient castle in need of modernization. She commissions a young architect from London, George Somerset, to undertake the work. Somerset falls in love with Paula. But Paula, the Laodicean of the title, meaning a person who is lukewarm or halfhearted, is torn between George's admiration and that of Captain De Stancy, whose old-world romanticism contrasts with Somerset's forward-looking outlook.
Paula's vacillation in her romantic life is also reflected in her views about religion, politics, and social progress, a dilemma faced by people in the Victorian era as industrialization was beginning to greatly change their lives. Paula will have to decide between the two men, however, or risk losing them both.

It's my favorite. A 'Laodician' is someone who is 'lukewarm
I've been on a binge reading Thomas Hardy. Just finished this lesser-known of his novels. It's my favorite. A 'Laodician' is someone who is 'lukewarm, neither hot nor cold,' a quote from The Biblical Book of Revelation. But there is very little religious about the novel. It's about a wealthy woman who can't make up her mind between status and love. This is a typical Hardyesque dilemma. Check out The Return of the Native- another of my favorites- and Desperate Remedies. Those who don't get past Tess Durbyville and Far From the Maddening Crowd miss much.
    A Hardy with modern relevance
To today's reader the novel will seem to start slowly. But trust Hardy to set up plot twists and ethical dilemmas that will haunt you long afterwards! He wrote this as a 'modern' story. It's not one of his very best, but it's well worth reading for anyone interested in the impacts of technology on human behavior-- the risks of relying on technology for 'truth'. His 19th century forms of technology were naturally more primitive than ours, but the issues he raises resonate strongly today.
Hardy on the whole hates happy endings but this book has one
Very well done. I got into the characters and the story was well developed. Hardy on the whole hates happy endings but this book has one, maybe.
    Interesting story line
A rather dark plot line, typical of Hardy, throughout the last two thirds of the book; but the overall story line is refreshingly different and enjoyable. The enigmatic Paula makes it impossible to guess the ending, especially with all the sinister influences surrounding her. A thoroughly enjoyable page turner.
    Another hearty Hardy.
This story has it all. Upstanding and low characters, romance for some, fiendish plots for others, castles, history and intriguing twists and turns.

    Publisher's Summary:
Phillip J. Mather's masterful rendition of this timeless classic is a must-listen for any with an interest in and respect for the past.
"Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the then Poet Laureate, wrote evocatively about the battle in his poem 'Charge of the Light Brigade'. Tennyson's poem, written on December 2, 1854 and published six weeks after the event on December 9, 1854, in The Examiner, praises the Brigade ('When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made!') while trenchantly mourning the appalling futility of the charge ('Not tho' the soldier knew, someone had blunder'd.... Charging an army, while all the world wonder'd'). Tennyson wrote the poem inside only a few minutes after reading an account of the battle in The Times, according to his grandson Sir Charles Tennyson. It immediately became hugely popular, and even reached the troops in the Crimea, where it was distributed in pamphlet form." (Wikipedia)
