Very gripping

The story was gripping once it hooked me. It took awhile. I had a very hard time listening to the reader. Her voice sounds like a very old granny and was very very hard to get used to. But eventually the story grabbed me and I wanted to listen more. Still not a fan if the reader but definitely the author. Will listen to more if there are other narrators.

Who was your favorite character and why?

William was my favorite character. He starts out innocent and quickly develops into a man plagued by many temptations. Although his attitude quickly changes to being selfish and lustful, he still retains a soft side that is hidden from him for a while. Once he's faced with his bad choices and how it has ruined paradise, William is repentant and wants to make things right if possible. He is very close to being human even though he's a character in a book!

What about Ruth Ann Phimisters performance did you like?

Yes. She changed her voice to represent each main character and held my interest.

Who was the most memorable character of The Novelist and why?

Casey was the most memorable character because she represented two people. She was the allegory personage of God in her novel, and she was a stressed mother in real life.

Any additional comments?

I very much appreciated the refreshing new story line. It wasn't a preachy book, yet, it clearly showed the struggle of good and evil. It brought to life how subtle satin's attacks are and how easily we fall into his hands if we aren't vigilant in our faith.

This one blew my mind...

Wow! What a great book. Even though I knew the concept of the story (allegory) within the story and I had read a lot of the other reviews before I read the book, this book was an awesome read. Ms. Hunt is a masterful storyteller and she does draw you in and yet she is also a very powerful teacher. God has gifted her greatly and she certainly uses this gift to help others understand some of the most thorny issues--free will vs. a divine plan.

A wonderful book......

An inspirational book all around. A motivational book from beginning to end. To all the woman who thought about life after divorce, well, this is it. A positive look at taking a step in the right direction to make a move that benefits herself in her life. Ellie (main character) learns alot after divorce, including how to enjoy new friendships (the red hat ladies), new hobbies, a self indulged new life, and a few chuckling disasterous dates. Definitely worth the one credit I used for this purchase, and would of definitely been worth the price of the book also. I didn't want to hear it end.

Hats Off to Red Hats

I love these books because they show how smart, savvy, and sexy woman are after 50. This books are fun, funny and are packed with wisdom. I never knew there were so many life lessons in the game of bridge! Sit down for a while, relax, feel good and take on the mystery of a rad Hat Society book. My only complaint is that I want to hear more. This is a must to listen.

Fun story of the folks in small town South Carolin

The ladies of Cayboo Creek, South Carolina are always there to support each other, often gathering in the Bottom Dollar Emporium to discuss life and everything happening in their small community. In book two, sisters, Chiffon and Chenille, are the center of interest. Never very close as children, and with a mom that was trying to raise beauty queens, they now find themselves thrown together by life's problems.

Chiffon's husband has gone to Hollywood on a prize that she actually won, but a sick baby kept her at home. Her sexy, handsome husband finds himself in the arms of a conniving Hollywood starlet, and he's not unhappy to be there. Added problems come because Chiffon has been left with no money but plenty of unpaid bills. Then she slips and sprains her ankle at her cafe job. Nothing to do but call upon her estranged sister to help with her children.

Conveniently, Chenille has just been fired from her teaching job because of the antics of her classroom helper. With everything in this small town being the source of gossip, and the media hounding Chiffon, it's up to the help of their friends for each of these women to take control of their lives and find true happiness.

I thoroughly enjoy these stories. The woman are all too human. The conversations and situations find truth in great humor and blunt common sense. The faults and foibles of small town life are wonderfully overrun by the loyalty, friendless, and community compassion found in difficult situations. Well written characters make me want to become friends with these ladies.

gloom and doom!

I could not finish this book. It started out interesting enough but one thing after another just kept happening to the main character...too much for me to buy into. Plus her sister was just plain pitiful so between both I found my self depressed and frustrated and the story unbelievable.

a sequel...

that is better than the first book. Worth your time and money.

Just Great ~ Enjoyable for all Ages !

I wish this book was also offered in the adult section, as it is fun for all ages! Kudos to the narrator who absolutely brings this to life: you can smell the marinara sauce cooking! The storyline is great; the authors bring you all the color and character of the neighborhood and those who live there --again, you feel like you know them and might bump into them on the street.

Whether you are more like Nicky and his father, or like Uncle Frankie or the goombas, you can relate to this warm, quickly-paced narrative that is also thought-provoking and nostalgic....and no, you don't have to be Italian to enjoy ~ I'm a grown woman from Missouri via Hawaii. Loved it!

well it leads you to think its good

This novel has to be the first time I have stopped listening to a book, let alone with only 10 minutes of the audiobook left. Throughout the entire book the characters pretend to be philosophically searching for some sort of purpose or social order that the protagonist is continually revising, while journeying through his therapy sessions, adventures from Connecticut to Ecuador, and medicating that is both pseudo and self prescribed. It waxes about a generation jaded and freed of the cold war and thrown into the war on terrorism. Goes on at length about the abundacy of choices provided by a "neo-liberal/neo conservative"(charcter says they are one in the same) political economy. How realtionships suck in New York, And says democratic socialism is the greatest thing on earth.

Basically the main character is an insufferable character that never reaches any intelligent conclusions though he speaks philosophically on EVERYTHING...AND in the end his choice illustrates how thourghly ignorant and malfunctioning he really is, besides not wanting to do anything truly productive in his life other than get high and have sex(the entire book is about that immature). The author also ends the book as if it needs some sort of ridiculous movie style ending with the protagnist making a jackass out of himself in public.

Awful

This is one of the worst books I have downloaded since I joined several years ago. I couldn't finish it, which is rare for me. Granted, some parts are laugh-out loud funny, but that doesn't make up for the absurd, hallucinatory stretches of prose that I never could make sense of. I really can't tell you the entire plot of the novel because I just didn't understand it and, after awhile, I didn't care. I never cared for the protagonist, nor for his self-absorbed wife, nor for the premise of the story.

I am all for imaginative, out-of-the-mainstream writing, but this was just pure nonsense.

Huh.

Entertaining to listen to. Pretty dark at times, but very good narration. Interesting story. Enjoyed the blue motherfucker inserted throughout.

One of the worst books I've ever read

This book was ridiculous full of plotholes and the only thing that compelled me to finish it was to be able to say that I finished it before writing this review.

Wonderful Read

I absolutely loved listening to this book. It was truly wonderful. June's voice plays each character so well. It is a very moving tale. It was the most memorable story I have heard since joining audible. Thank you.

a well read tale

At first I was a bit disappointed in my purchase thinking this book nothing more than fluff, but then suddenly I found myself invested in the characters and curiously caring about their circumstances. For me the narration made the story - fluff or not. I doubt anyone else could have drawn me in. Before I knew it, I was extending my walks just a little further . . . I may just chance another book by this author provided the same narrator is on board.

Great Story!

I loved the characters in this book. They sort of drew you into their lives. The setting on the sea was beautiful too. I really enjoyed it.

A very good way to relax after a stressful day

I loved this story for it's easy listening style and many threads that eventually came together. I felt I knew the house and the characters well and didn't want to say goodbye to them. It is not a taxing tale in any way and may be too slow moving for many people, but brought to me cosy feelings of sitting around a fire with my family while someone read a book to us.

Narration dreadful

This is a really good story but I'm afraid I won't be buying anything else narrated by June Barrie. I'm sure she's a perfectly lovely woman but she is so terribly, terribly 'posh'. Every single character is endowed with the same 'well-bred gels' accent it's like listening to a BBC drama from the 1940s. Shame as I really enjoyed the story but the narration really spoilt it for me.

Entertaining and fun!

I hesitated to purchase this because I read to a negative review of the narration. I loved it and found the narration charming, but I am from the south and know ladies who talk like that! Great characters and a fun story. If you appreciate Lee Smith's work and the stories of the south, you will love this. I have read all of her books and enjoy listening to them also.

Great Story but Abysmal Narration

The story is well written, Lee Smith is a great painter of characters, and the pacing is a bit slow, which I find reflects the genre of 1970s Southern authors. However, I suggest you read the paper version because the narrator is so overwrought, stilted and tedious to listen to I could not take it. Imagine 12 hours listening to someone who took a little too much pride is her elocution lessons - everything so painfully over-enunciated as to sound forced and pretentious, detracting from the story.

There are so many great readers on Audible, better to find one of them instead. Lee Smith has a great story in Fancy Strut, but it's not worth listening to this caricature of a reader who seems to be trying to sound as if her voice is more important than the words it carries.

Enjoyable fiction

I needed to pick up some legal and police vocabulary in Spanish so I chose this book. I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed this book and picked up a lot of vocabulary in the process. The guilty person is right in front of you from the beginning, but it's very difficult to guess who it could be.
