Poppet Will Make Your Skin Crawl
If you could sum up Poppet in three words, what would they be?
Riveting, thrilling, creepy.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jack Caffrey because he is a good man but he has flaws. He is imperfect but moralistic, which sounds strange but it's a successful combination which works and makes him a 'real' character.
Have you listened to any of Jot Daviess other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. I enjoy his work. He is easy to listen to and all his characters are distinguishable. His accents are excellent and you can get lost in his reading which is how it should be.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have loved to have had that luxury. As it was, it was the last thing I listened to before falling asleep and the first thing I reached for on waking up!
Any additional comments?
I did miss the 'Walking Man' as he is a powerful and wise character. I will wait in anticipation for Mo Hayder's next offering.
Gripping and terrifying
I loved Mo Hayder's early novels but have been so disappointed by the most recent ones that it took me a long time to decide to download this one. I am so glad that I did and cannot wait for the next Jack Caffrey. The beginning is so creepy and terrifying that I almost gave up listening but it is this creepiness that entices you in to the characters and the story. It is so excellently constructed that for most of the novel I really did not know where it was going and was constantly surprised. Unlike many current crime novels Hayder does not resort to cliches but uses plot and excellent characterisation to keep you listening. Jot Davies also narrates this excellently and I hope he continues to narrate the Caffrey series.
Not for the faint hearted !
In her usual brilliant style another complex plot
With interesting and believable characters
Well researched and very very clever .
Adrenalin producing probably best not listened
To at night if you want to sleep !
Best not to listen to at night when on your own...
Mo Hayder's stories scare the beejesus out of me, and still I cannot stop, I just enjoy the scary stuff!
This book doesn't disappoint, and I'm glad I got the audiobook, because the narration is also very very good. From the very beginning, there are two stories intertwined: one, concerning a disappeared person, who sees Jack Caffrey involved from the start, and the other story, taking place in the mental hospital, that slowly creeps into Caffrey's line of work. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling the book to other readers, but while I didn't guess the end, I knew that some things "were not as they seemed"...
