Whiskers & Whiskeys Nation, if you’re anything like us, when the calendar flips to August, you’re officially done with summer. Let’s cover up the grill and instead grab the slow cooker. Bathing suits to the back of the closet, break out the crewneck. Less mango in my beer, more pumpkin. Fall is almost upon us, football is here, and the boys are BACK. And let’s not forget the most important tradition of all: placing multiple 12 leg parlays on college football futures. Your 401k isn’t going to fund itself, and your first step to financial freedom is our ACC preview. 3 more installments are coming fast and then it’s TROPHY TIME BOYS!
As we wrap up the holidays, so to we must wrap up the college football season. But there’s still a few gifts stuffed in our stockings. Four blue blood programs remain. After neutering the dawgs, the Irish hope to continue to honor Bob Barker and help control the pet population by spaying the resurgent Nittany Lions. And then the Longhorns stampede into Arlington, straight into the teeth of a scarlet & grey Buckeye buzzsaw. Cheers!
Alright folks, you know what time of year it is. It’s that magical time between Christmas and New Years. No one is doing a damn thing. You’re eating bad food and you have heartburn all the time. All work is being postponed. You have nothing to do but listen to this episode. Do it. Do it now.
It’s the Thursday before Christmas. You’re not working. And you’re not fooling anyone. And nobody cares. We all just pretend to work the past two weeks. This week, we stopped even pretending. Mute Teams and change your status to Away. Close Outlook. Open up a new tab. Start filling out your playoff bracket. And let us drop some pearls of football knowledge in your ear holes. Cheers!
College football fans are not normal people. We’re a little odd. A little strange. Hard for most common folk to comprehend. Every Saturday for 3 months out of the year, we are absolutely locked in on 30+ games. Sure, you can explain the passion for your alma mater. But why in the blue hell are you glued to the screen at 11 PM EST watching San Jose State and Fresno State duke it out? Why do you spend your Tuesday’s watching what’s essentially beer league football? Why are you so obsessed with a freaking bucket? Hard to explain. Hard conversation to have at the Thanksgiving table. It’s equally hard to explain exactly why a fine Catholic university in Indiana with an upstanding tradition of smash-mouth football competes with the flashy elite of Southern California in an annual contest over a glorified stick. But better than explaining it to the naysayers - just sit them down and let them watch. Let them feel something primal. Feel something biblical. Feel something that defies explanation. Is it because of the money? Is it because of the temperate climate? Is it tradition or pride or glory or glamour or love or hate? It’s all of that and more. It’s college football. Irish. Trojans. This is the tale of the Jeweled Shillelagh.
Los Angeles. The City of Angels. But don’t tell that to the undergrads of the fine universities that call this city home. For the better part of a century, they’ve battled in the most mischievous, dastardly prank war this country has seen since Adams College in 1984. Defaced statues, manure bombs, cricket infestations. All in the name of their proverbial Helen of Troy - a golden bell that rings the sweet sounds of victory throughout the Hollywood Hills. Bruins. Trojans. This is the tale of the Victory Bell.
The academic institutions in the Bay Area have produced some of the most brilliant minds and innovative solutions in all disciplines of science. However, one of their greatest contributions to society may be the one most often overlooked and undervalued. For over 130 years, two schools have competed so fiercely and vigorously in all aspects of the undergraduate experience, chief amongst them being their meeting on the gridiron. Their passion burns gloriously in their rally bonfires. The rivalry has produced legends like Andy Smith and the Immortal 21. The undergrads have committed dastardly capers ripped straight from the pages of a Hollywood script. There are hundreds of college football games every season - but this is the only Big Game. Cardinal. Golden Bears. This is the tale of the Stanford Axe.
They say there’s two sides to every story - but sometimes, two sides isn’t enough to properly tell a tale. Just ask the good people of Utah. In the conquest for football supremacy in the old frontier, the Holy War is just yet another battle to be won. And victory in the Battle of the Brothers doesn’t necessarily secure ultimate triumph. And when you journey to the promised land, it’s always good to have an Old Wagon Wheel - but don’t take your eyes off the prize. Be where your feet are - or rather, where you want your feet to be: nestled snuggly in a century-old pioneer boot. Utes. Cougars. Aggies. This is the tale of the Beehive Boot.
Folks, most of the time we’re doing these podcasts for you, the fans, our loyal Whiskers & Whiskeys Nation. And sometimes we’re doing it for us. Just a couple of buds, shooting the breeze, talking about a sport we love and a trophy that’s pretty meh. This episode is one of the latter. White millenial males don’t need therapy, they just need a podcast. Grab a drink and come hang with us. Cheers boys.
Welcome back to Whiskers & Whiskeys, Sports Talk Radio. The actions of Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard, practicing their jumpers during a play, really highlights the lack of maturity and leadership in that Crimson Tide locker room. Do you think Saban would’ve stood for that? I didn’t think so. How about Julio Jones? DeVonta Smith? Couple of guys that know a thing or two about catching passes, also know a thing about blocking. How about Jalen Hurts, you think he’d let Williams and Bernard act like this? How about Tua Tagovailoa? AJ McCarron? Mark Ingram? You think any of those guys would’ve let this go on in their locker room? How bout Courtney Upshaw? Minkah Fitzpatrick? Quinnen Williams? Daron Payne? Dont’a Hightower? CJ Mosley, you think CJ Mosley was watching the game Saturday and said “Hey those guys are working hard and giving it their all?” I don’t think he did! Rolando McClain? Shaun Alexander? Jay Barker? You think these guys would’ve let it stand? I know for a FACT they wouldn’t have. Wayne Wheeler? Buddy Brown? Major Ogilvie? They’d have took care of it in house, settled it like gentlemen, by bullying Williams and Bernard relentlessly. How about Fred Pickhard? Wu Winslett? Red Brown? Go back to 1926, you think ANYBODY on that 1926 team would’ve let that sh- Alright, this is EJ taking over. Today’s pod is about the Jefferson Eppes Trophy. No, not the New York financier. Cheers.
