At RockNess 2012 Whisky Comedian Alan Anderson opened the festival as the first performer on stage on the Friday compering the comedy tent. The next morning he kicked off Saturday’s proceedings at lunchtime in the Goldenvoice Arena by Djing to 5,000 Tim Minchin fans.

A few hours later he enjoys some really special malt whiskies with a couple of the other Rockness comedians. Here he’s joined by former Scottish Comedian of the Year Mark Nelson and slightly overly inebriated and very inappropriate Chris Henry, having a swig of some Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve and Lark Single Cask 202 from Tasmania in Australia.

Here he is joined by RockNess Festival Director Jim King as he waits for a helicopter, with the boys from Biffy Clyro, to land in the field behind him.

They discuss the history of RockNess, Jim's favourite headliners Daft Punk and Fat Boy Slim as well as Jim's opportunity to carry the Olympic Torch on stage at the festival.

Jim drinks Tomatin 18 year old. A non chill filtered whisky initially aged in American oak then married with Spanish olorosso sherry casks.

Tomatin is the closet distillery to RockNess, just over the hill you can see behind him.

Here he is joined by Miguel Montavani and Archerio from BBC Let's Dance For Comic Relief finalists The Cuban Brothers.

The boys have just stormed it on the main stage with their 10 piece band. As a reward Alan gives them a very rare 21 year old Glenfiddich Havana Reserve.

At the Altitude Comedy Festival in Mayrhofen, Austria on World Whisky Day, Phill Jupitus gets to taste the Whisky of the Year Old Pulteney 21yr Old.

Old Pulteney 21 Year Old has been voted 2012 World Whisky of the Year by the prestigious "Jim Murray's Whisky Bible."

Scoring a record-equalling 97.5 points out of 100, it is only the third time that a single malt has ever won the prestigious award, and we are just the second Scottish distillery to do so.


Tasting Notes:

As with the 17-year-old, with this expression we marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. The crucial difference, however, is that the ex-sherry wood in this case is made from American Oak (mostly Fino sherries). This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.

Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.

Whisky Comedian Alan Anderson has a chat with the host of this year’s Scottish Comedian of the Year final Raymond Mearns.

If you have ever been to one of Raymond’s gigs you’ll know that he has an encyclopaedic knowledge and would be an ideal member of any quiz team. His knowledge of whisky is similarly vast and thanks to his attendance of Tam’s Drams whisky tasting evening at Glasgow’s Bon Accord his knowledge is forever expanding.

Today we give Raymond a wee tipple of the Isle of Arran Distillery’s Sleeping Warrior:

The stunning profile of the summits and ridges on the north-end of the Isle of Arran is referred to as The Sleeping Warrior due to its resemblance to a resting human figure.  These mountains attract thousands of visitors each year which leads to the erosion of the landscape.  A donation from every bottle sold of The Sleeping Warrior will be made to The National Trust for Scotland to help maintain the footpaths on Goatfell, Arran's highest peak, for the enjoyment of all.

 

This limited edition of The Arran Malt, from our 2000 vintage, is bottled at natural cask strength from a combination of our finest ex-European and American oak casks selected by Master Distiller James MacTaggart.

 

Tasting Notes

 

Aroma: Dark and brooding in colour, the Sleeping Warrior is rich and robust on the nose with aromas of liquorice, leather and boiled sweets.

 

Palate: Dark cherries and stewed fruits dominate the palate, whilst a softer, sweeter side emerges with water leading to lemon sherbet and toffee apples.

 

Finish: With an enduring spicy and complex conclusion this is indeed a true mountain of a malt.
