  • #520 Deer Hunting -Whitetail Underground – Eli Gesell

Deer Hunting -Whitetail Underground – Eli Gesell My name Is Eli Gesell, and I am 33 years old. I have a blog called whitetail underground, http://www.whitetailunderground.com/blog

which I have been too busy lately I haven’t been able to write anything, do to my 11 and 14 y/o boys in sports and life in general.

My wife and I grew up on dairy farms in central MN, where we still live. We have both of our parent’s farm to hunt on, plus a couple other private areas, but recently I have been hunting mostly public land.

For the simple reason of the private land we have is not only hunted by us but other family as well, and I wanted to take pressure off those spots. I then fell in love with the challenge of public, and that I have many, many more option to go now.

We plant food plots, hang stands and many other hunting related things together. I got my wife into hunting shortly after we were married. I started the blog after I had been kicking the idea around about trying to film for 5 or 6 years and I had an ice fishing accident with carbon monoxide that almost killed me.

  • #518 Deer Hunting – Redneck Blinds – TJ Pugh

We’re heading to the home of Redneck Blinds https://redneckblinds.com  Deer Hunting – Redneck Blinds – TJ Pugh and we’re going to talk with TJ Pugh. TJ is the Chief Marketing Director  for Redneck Blinds and TJ, in the warm-up we’ve been talking about a lot of things, folks, so take some notes.

And some of the things we’re going to talk about you’re going to maybe question or say, “I don’t know if I would do that.” Well, listen to the whole thing on an open mind, with an open wind, because things are changing in the whitetail woods about the ability to do all-day sits, the ability to have kids in stands, the ability to have veterans in stands or people like myself that got some screws in their body. And we’ll share a story about one of my friends at KO Farms that he can’t sit outside below zero, and now he can. So, TJ, welcome to the show.

Thanks, Bruce. Thanks for having us. We appreciate you inviting on the show and we look forward to talking hunting and I hope your guests enjoy it.

Well, I love talking hunting, but I want to stay right where we were. And, you know, I’ve got some pieces in my body that don’t belong there, and my friend Kenny Olson at KO Farms definitely has. And he bought some of your blinds and now he can stay below zero, Wisconsin, gun season, and he can sit out all day in perfect comfort. Why? Because he has a propane tank into a furnace on a thermostat and he keeps it right around 40 degrees. And let’s talk about the ability of your blinds and other companies’ blinds that allow people to have…to be comfortable yet still hunting. Let’s talk about that.

  • # 517 Deer Hunting – Real Tree – Josh Honeycutt

Hey, folks, welcome to a special edition of Whitetail Rendezvous Deer Hunting – Real Tree – Josh Honeycutt. All our editions are special, but what we’re doing with Realtree and Josh Honeycutt, he is the deer hunting manager. And what does that mean? He takes care of all the digital. You go to the website and look up “deer hunting” and there’s josh, and he’s handling all that for Realtree. So Josh and I have come together and once a month we’re going to kind of go over what they’re putting out, what they’re seeing on a monthly basis. And this session we’re going to talk about prepping for the season. That’s wide open, that’s a lot of things. And the other part, the second part of the show, we’re going to talk about land management. Josh, let’s just start right off with, you know, what you’re seeing, what you’re hearing, and what you’re telling people about preseason prepping. https://www.realtree.com/brow-tines-and-backstrap/21-off-season-tasks-for-true-deer-hunters Yeah, I mean this is a good time of year. 21 Off-Season Tasks for True Deer Hunters Turkey season is starting to wind down, I’m actually finishing up https://www.realtree.com/turkey-hunting. I’ve got three more episodes of our digital turkey series The Reason for the Hunt https://www.realtree.com/deer-hunting/videos/the-reason-for-the-hunt-early-season-deer-hunting-and-droptine-bucks that we’ve put out, we’ve got three episodes of that to release this month, and then we’ll be full bore into deer season. But, yeah, it’s the time of year whenever everybody is really starting to transition off of turkey season or starting to think more about land management, starting to think more about getting out there and getting ready for deer season. But, yeah, there’s a lot of things that we’re doing right now. We haven’t actually started putting out mineral yet here, at least not in Kentucky. Some states can, but we can’t put mineral out until May 31st. You can’t feed wildlife from I think it’s March 1st to May 31st. So we haven’t really started putting mineral out for deer yet, we haven’t put any kind of bait out for deer, I have not put my cameras back out yet. Once June 1st hits, you know, usually that first week of June, that’s when I put my mineral out, that’s when I put my cameras back out. But right now I have been pretty heavy on planting spring food plots. Or, excuse me, planting early season food plots for early bow season that we’ll kind of focus on during September and October. https://www.realtree.com/users/jhoneycutt So early season food plots is a big topic right now because everybody is planting those. If you want to plant fall food plots, obviously we’re going to wait until August or September to plant those, but depending on where you’re at in the country. But, yeah, it’s the time of year where it’s not quite full bore in preseason mode for most people, but we’re definitely right on the cusp of that preseason work busting loose. So early season food plots is a big topic right now Now when you’re saying you put in some, you know, summer crops, what are you putting in? Well, mostly what we plant for early season, at least here what I prefer, and this is all personal preference, I love for an early season food plot… Because, see, I’m in an area where it’s a good mix of timber,

  • # 516 Prophet Muskwa Outfitters British Columbia – Nathan Olmstead

The beginning of Prophet Muskwa Outfitters http://www.olmsteadhunting.com/..And then let’s talk about your mom and dad and go back into history, you know, lay out the history. Because I think that…I don’t “think,” I think that’s really, really important, you know, for people to understand. They’re going, “Well, you know, this outfit has been there a long time,” and those type of things. And that gives people confidence. You know, it’s not an infomercial for you, it’s more of an info base. Just like people say, “What’s it take”… I live in Colorado. They say, “What’s it take to hunt elk?” I said, you know, “You got to be mentally tough.” I tell them all the time. Because I’ve seen guys that are, you know, just physically animals, but are five days in the hunt, they haven’t seen anything, they haven’t seen any fresh sign, and they go, “Where are the elk?” I said, “They’re right here, you just have to”… it’s some place you ought to check out. Nathan and his family have owned that concession up there for, I believe, over 30 years and it’s a place that if you want to get wild, if you want to get wilderness, if you want to get dropped off and get picked up, it’s some place you ought to check out. let’s give a little backstory on the whole outfit up there and tell people, you know, about your mom and dad and how they got the concessions. And the stories I love is how you cut in those, you know, not the base camps, but your spike camps. And it’s just amazing what you guys have to do, you know, to do that. People don’t understand how much work it takes, you know, to manage the size of the land, the concessions, that you have. Nathan: You bet. Yeah, I’m originally from the States, my dad was born in Iowa, and my mom was born in California. My dad was always a huge hunter. He got into life insurance and estate planning back in the ’70s and ’80s, and from there he, you know, made some money and would go hunting and ended up in British Columbia for a moose and he thought to himself, “You know, I could do this.” And so from there we bought our first concession in Yukon back in 1984. And from then on it was my dad was, you know, full-time outfitter and full-time life insurance and estate planning all the way through. And we had areas, you know, throughout the U.S., as well, in Idaho and Montana and it just ended up not being what my dad thought was his idea of his business plan. So he did a lot of research and figured out exactly what he wanted and what areas that he thought were going to be the best. And that’s when we found the Prophet, and that was in 1991 he found that. And made the purchase in ’92, and ’92 was our first year of operating. And from then on for my brother, Sean and I that was home for us and where we learned how to… You know, started of wrangling when I was 10 years old and my brother was 13 and we would take, you know, 15 horses and go 7, 8, 10 hours from one camp to the next and spend the night and bring a couple horses back or go out with the guys and learn how to, you know, sheep hunt and moose hunt and call elk and pack horses, do everything. I mean we had kind of diversified and went to the Yukon once more and got a white sheep area that my dad’s ultimate goal was to have an outfit that you can do the grand slam all within one company, all with one person, you can come book your hunts, make your plans, and do it all within one place. And I guess about four years ago we finally got that, we have our two areas in B.C.,

  • # 514 Women Deer Hunt Too – Dawn Freeland

Women Deer Hunt Too with Dawn Freeland…I started out doing a radio talk show called Shooting It Straight on Saturdays tan talk1340.com. The show talked about guns, pistols, couple’s, hunting and shooting. They have since changed their format. I appear on local TV Shows for special hunting events and I also do radio interviews. But writing about my outdoors experiences is where my heart is at. Being a female hunter in a male dominated sport has been trying at times. The prejudices and attitudes have been the hardest to overcome. Some other difficulties have been working with gun store owners, property owners, and the “Good Old Boys Club”. I believe I have used my love of the sport to sustain my drive in becoming a successful hunter. I also use my love and knowledge of the sport to help other female hunters have an enjoyable and successful hunting experience, whether they are just starting out or are an experienced female hunter. Welcome to Women Hunt Too! http://www.womenhunttoo.com/ The Original in the Women Too series of sites! We hope to spread the word that women do belong in the woods as well as everywhere else in the outdoors! The Women Too Series was started by none other than Dawn Freeland herself! Dawn hold’s titles such as: Lead Advocate for Women Outdoors in her home state of Michigan, Queens of Camo 2013, Miss Camo Queen 2012, Miss Huntress USA 2011, not to mention being featured in several on-line Hunting and Fishing monthly spotlights. • # 511 Her Humble Hunt” Part 2 – Bianca Jane

Beauty & Her Bow – I’m literally lying in bed right now Blog: Beauty & Her Bow – I’m literally lying in bed right now, completely drained from a busy week with the kids and a weekend full of getting a lot of things done. Nurse life has kicked back in full swing with lots of hours as deer season is behind me and it’s back to preparing for the next. I’m trying to make a position change to shorter shifts, not working 12’s and being away from my family and home as much . So you know the daunting task interviews hold. I will survive though. Before I drift off into dream world, I wanted to share that my mind can finally rest in regards to my ongoing efforts to develop a nonprofit foundation for women and young girls centered around archery. Somewhere in the midst I still heard the whisper of a message Somewhere in the midst I still heard the whisper of a message being broadcast to me from various conversations I’ve had with other women. The message was clear, right now, I just don’t have the resources to buy a bow, I don’t know where to even start or pick which one and I have no one to help teach me. Why does this ring home so hard for me? Because I said the same things at one time. With no teacher close to home, I relied on long distance communications with veteran bowhunters to learn how to crawl, then walk in my own skills using a bow. The day after I first shot a bow…I was HOOKED! My college tuition for summer was coming up, my kids needed yet again new sneakers, my daughters ball league fees were due, we all still needed winter gear for deer season and the list goes on but by gosh, I HAD to have a bow. I HAD to have a bow I literally made a leap of faith and hoped to pick up overtime before my deadline because getting my first bow was more important to me at that moment. I barely even knew how to pick my bow up correctly the first few weeks without turning it 10 times, but it was like a need for oxygen to have a bow at this point. The way it felt when I released an arrow, the sound when it landed and the way it felt in my hand did something to me that day. The therapeutic effects I feel now when shooting is something I crave every day and enjoy the relaxing state it puts me in.
