Important changes are coming to the Family Law Act with a particular emphasis on family violence in property settlements for separating married and de facto couples.

Under these amendments, animal abuse or threatening behaviour towards family pets will also be treated as a form of family violence.

Mike is joined by Carol Pages, Family Lawyer & Principal of Pages Family Law, who says, “From 10 June, pets will be referred to as ‘companion animals’ and will no longer be treated as just property in Court.

For the first time, matters such as who cared for the pet, the emotional attachment of the parties to the pet - including children - and the ability to care for the pet long term will be considered in all disputes about companion animals.

Any family violence in the relationship, including against the pet, will also be considered.
