Page-turning Mystery
Arthur Dash may be the meanest boy in schoolâa âbig, fat, scary-looking dudeââ to some, but when he tells this rollicking whodunit for readers ages 9-12, his voice is more worried than warrior. But his schoolmate Darius Drake, the red-headed smartest and weirdest ward of the Stonehill Home for Children, thinks heâs tough enough to offer protection, and now Arthur must prove it. For a mere Snickers bar (or three), heâll a scowl and make a frightening face. When he hears about the blood-stained letter, the creepy old house with a red-headed effigy hanging and perhaps a hidden treasure that others have failed to unearth, Arthur realizes heâs bitten off more than a mere three candy bars can cover. Eventually they enlist the help of Deidre, Arthurâs stepsister, whoâs smart and resourceful enough to turn up at the old house with gear needed to solve the mystery. Philbrick is a master of the mystery; his previous books have garnered awards and fans. This newest is short enough to appeal to younger kids not quite ready for heftier mysteries, and it has enough gruesome details to keep older readers following the clues and turning the pages.
