I grew up with Enid Blyton books and loved them! I introduced her as an author to my young daughter who did not always enjoy reading. As the stories are light and easy reading and come in series - it was perfect for her! Although times have changed, certain aspects will always be the same no matter what decade you went to school in. She is loving the books and can't wait to start the next one...

Sweet little story

I enjoyed this sweet little story about a young girl suffering from lose of her grandmother and a leg in an accident. Moving and finding that the school bully is nothing short of mean. But a pony suffering causes her to dig deeper within herself and her own hurts to help. Sweet story full of hope and perseverance. Received this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review.

All the Elements for a Perfect Christmas Book

This is so much more than merely a story about a disabled young woman and her quest to save a starving horse. This is a little book that looms large with Christmas spirit and page after page of lovely writing that puts you solidly in every scene.

Hannah is a new student at a rural school in a Canadian town where her parents have recently moved. She is essentially an outcast because others are intent on focusing on her prosthetic lega prosthesis that became part of her life after a tragic accident. Read this and enter Hannahs worlda world in which a lovely young dreamer quietly marginalizes her disability and never stops dreaming.

Her dreams involve flying high on the back of a ponya pony that, in real life, is vastly different from her dreams. Hannah first sees the horse on the way home from school. It is exposed to the elements; it is unkempt and underfed. She secretly names the horse Mr. Frost or Frosty. She determines that somehow, she will be the one to save the starving horse.

Accordingly, she takes riding lessons as the fall merges into winter, and she firms up her plan with the help of a young native. He doesnt talk much, but she appreciates a contented silence, and the two become close friends. Together, they secretly slip food to the starving horse, and Hannah seeks to gain the skittish horses trust.

While she knows better, Hannah determines to remove the horse from its dreadful surroundings and claim it for herself. That determination sets off a string of events that culminates in one of the most heart-warming Christmas books youll read anywhere.

Leslie Howards narration is a treasure of the first and best kind. Her inflections and cadences are perfect; she becomes Hannah, and her narration allows you to feel the cold of the winter mornings as a lovely young woman walks tall, so to speak, in her determination to save an ailing horse and live a dream. Interestingly enough, her seemingly small efforts ultimately save far more than a horse.

In summation, if you have a choice of reading the print copy of this or listening to the excellent narration, go with the narration. It adds a richness to the book that will enhance your enjoyment of it.

This is a highly appropriate book for anyone of any age to enjoy.

I loved this book

I loved this book. As a huge fan of both the Addams Family movies and the Lemony Snicket novels, I was psyched when I saw the product description. The book didnât disappoint. It was a bit slow for me in the beginning but I got quickly hooked to the quirky Crims family and the mystery plot. :) great read

This book is for kids who'd read more if they could find something completely odd. Give them a copy...and say nothing.

Man, this book is out there. I mean OUT THERE. Itâs clever and full of imaginative writing, but just so strange.

And very difficult to explain. The story's hero Perry is a young introvert who loves a comic book hero named Admiral Uli. Admiral Uli appears in a comic series titled Ocean Blasterzoids and the author includes a few pages from this made-up comic book to introduce most of the chapters in Mutant Bunny Island. Admiral Uliâs adventures in the comic book usually slightly correspond with what Perry is going through in real life. Er, well, in book life. Where heâs had to make an emergency trip to a whacko place named Bunny Island in order to rescue his missing uncle.

One other thing--Admiral Uli is a squid who fights off evil newts in the comic series, thus preventing them from taking over the world. And Perry actually thinks this squid vs. newt war is real, so heâs always worried about newt attacks. Which distracts him from the ACTUAL dangers heâs facing from mutant bunnies.

Confused? Probably.

This book is for kids who think âWeird is good, but weirdest is awesome.â Or who make claims such as âIâd read more, if I could just find something completely odd.â Give them Mutant Bunny Island...and say nothing. Appropriate and safe for boys or girls, ages 6 to 12.

Very cute!

The second book in the series focuses on Sophia, the sports-minded ex-best friend from the first book. One of the things that I liked about the books is that they stressed the fact that all of the girls in the coding club have different talents and interests besides coding. Lucy is relatively focused on all things tech, but Sophieâs sporty, Maya loves fashion and Erin enjoys theatre. It shows that you donât have to be all about computers to enjoy coding and opens kidsâ eyes to the myriad of ways that computers can apply to other areas of interest.

In this book, the coding group is all set to compete in a robotics competition, but Sophia runs into some issues with her familyâs scheduling and instead of letting her friends know and trusting that theyâll have her back, she tries to fix the problems all on her own. Not surprisingly, that doesnât work well. Itâs not until she finally tells her friends whatâs going on that they all work together to solve the problem.

Many middle school girls will probably relate to Sophiaâs issues at home, where she feels a bit overlooked. Her family relies on her a lot to take care of her little sisters. I wasnât a fan of Sophiaâs parentsâthey really didnât seem to care much about their daughterâs dreams or interests. Iâm sure this has happened to almost all parents at one point or anotherâwhere you know something is important to your kid, but you just canât make it happen scheduling-wiseâbut I thought that their attitude about it all was kind of cruel (I feel like I would have at least tried my very hardest to make things work out differentlyâit didnât feel like Sophiaâs parents tried very hard at allâher father even put up extra roadblocks at the very last minute). Still, Iâm guessing the theme of feeling overlooked will resonate with a lot of kids.

This book has a little bit of a romantic subplot as well, which Iâm sure a lot of middle school girls will enjoy. It was cute and I loved the way that it was all resolved. I donât think this book tied in quite as much practical coding knowledge as the first book did, but we did get to see the girls in action at the robotics competition and see their problem-solving skills at work there.

Overall, this was a really fun read that I highly recommend to middle grade girls or even younger. I give this book an easy 4/5 Stars

Wow, just stunning! I knew it would be good but in person, it's just amazing. There is SO much art in this book and so much life. Thank you Armand for such an incredible book to add to our family collection.

Amazing Graphics throughout coupled with an action packed story

Amazing graphics, terrific story. My student's love this book; I can't keep it in my library...had to buy a second copy and both copies are still always out! I can't wait for the sequel to come out!

Another winner by Rod Philbrick! With all the anti-bullying attention kids books is getting this is a very readable & believable story of an adventure, a mystery and a friendship between two unlikely boys. It's on my gift-giving list!

Page-turning Mystery

1950's Historical Fiction

Suspect Red

Thanks to the #kidlitexchange network for the review copy of this book - all opinions are my own.

It's the first day of summer vacation in 1953 and Richard is celebrating by rereading one of his favorite books, Robin Hood. It's been a hard year in 8th grade, mostly because his best friends decided to abandon him to concentrate on sports and girls. But today he's feeling relaxed, because at last he can be himself and just spend his time on his favorite pastime, reading. At least he's relaxed until his mom sees what he's reading. She instantly takes the book away, reminding him that Mr. Hoover, his dad's boss in the FBI, says that Robin Hood is one of the subversive books, because itâs about taking from the rich and giving to the poor. From that moment on in the story, you learn more and more about McCarthyism and the climate of the early 50s. I was disgusted and indignant, to be reminded of how Americanâs freedoms were ignored as Senator Joseph McCarthy led the nation and the FBI in the search for communists. Each of the bookâs chapters is about a month in 1953 and begins with news stories from the month, as well as pictures, which make it all the more real to the reader.

I really liked the respect, concern and empathy that Richard showed his parents in the book, even though he often disagreed with them. Also, Richard's little sister was a spunky nine year old, who I'd like to know a lot better. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a historical fiction book that's full of action. It's best for fifth grade and up.

Cold War History!

Thanks to NetGalley and Disney-Hyperion for the opportunity to read and review Suspect Red by L.M. Elliott! Chapter One is entitled "June 1953"; the book opens as Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are executed for giving the Soviet Union U. S. atomic bomb technology. More factual information is given: the reason for the Berlin Wall and censorship with books, before the story begins. Set in the Cold War era, Richard enjoys reading about spies and other topics that the government frowns upon at the time. His father works for the FBI and was active in the military during wartime. The story alternates between true historical moments and photographs to the fictional characters of Richard and his family and their lives.
