Who Needs a DOT Number

Listen Later

A Department of Transportation (DOT) number is a unique identifier required for certain commercial vehicles operating in the U.S.A. It serves as a means to monitor and ensure safety compliance for carriers involved in interstate and, in some cases, intrastate commerce.

Here's who typically needs a DOT number:

  1. Interstate Commercial Vehicles: If you operate any of the following types of vehicles in interstate commerce (across state or national borders), you will need a DOT number:
  • Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCW) of 10,001 pounds or more.
  • Vehicles designed or used to transport a truck holding more than 8 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation.
  • Vehicles designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver) and not used to transport passengers for compensation.
  • Any vehicle transporting hazardous materials requires the truck to be placarded under the Hazardous Materials Regulations.
  1. Intrastate Commercial Vehicles: While the DOT number requirement is primarily for interstate commerce, many states also require intrastate commercial vehicle registrants to obtain a DOT number. This criteria can be similar to or vary from the federal DOT number requirements. It's essential to check with the local state's transportation department to understand the specific intrastate requirements.
  2. Specialized Commercial Activities: Some commercial activities might also have specific DOT number requirements, regardless of the vehicle's size or the materials it's transporting. This can vary based on federal and state regulations.

Remember that having a DOT number often comes with other responsibilities, such as maintaining a safety record, undergoing vehicle inspections, and periodically updating the registration. Failure to comply can lead to penalties and out-of-service orders.

Suppose you need more clarification about whether you need a DOT number or not. In that case, you should reach out to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) or your state's transportation department for guidance.
