Who Needs IRP

Listen Later

Are you a trucking company trying to navigate the confusing world of the International Registration Plan (IRP)? We understand how daunting it can be, especially if you're new to the process. That's why many interstate trucking companies rely on trucking company software, like ours, to simplify the application process and track their IRP reports and payments.

So, what exactly is IRP? It's a registration reciprocity agreement that regulates the registration and operation of commercial vehicles in the US and Canada. It allows for the registration of commercial vehicles in multiple jurisdictions and the payment of licensing fees based on the percentage of miles traveled in each jurisdiction.

Here's how it works: if your interstate trucking company operates 50% of the time in Ohio, you'll only have to pay 50% of the annual fee for Ohio. Each member jurisdiction of the IRP manages their own plan and collects registration fees from home-based trucking companies, distributing them to other member jurisdictions.

The main purpose of IRP is to promote interstate commerce and make it easier for registered motor carriers to travel through all member jurisdictions. It streamlines licensing and reporting requirements, so you only need one license plate and cab card for each vehicle. Plus, you can legally engage in interstate or interprovincial commerce.

If you have commercial vehicles that operate in multiple states or provinces, with a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds or three or more axles, you'll need an IRP registration. However, certain vehicles, like recreational vehicles or government-owned vehicles, are exempt.

Applying for IRP plates may seem overwhelming, but with our practical trucker's guide, it's a breeze. You'll need an established place of business in your base jurisdiction and the necessary documentation to prove it. Application and registration periods vary by jurisdiction, but the reporting period is from July 1 to June 30.

Make sure to keep track of the miles driven in each jurisdiction, as IRP fees are based on mileage. Our TruckingOffice software can simplify this process for you.

Understanding and complying with IRP requirements is crucial to avoid penalties. If you need more information or assistance, don't hesitate to contact Trucking Office today. We're here to help you navigate the world of IRP registration.

We offer full trucking authority packages to make the launching of your trucking company business go more smoothly. The Department of Transportation regulates safety so doing it right in the begging is very important.
