The City of Johannesburg started a public participation process to have William Nicol Drive renamed after struggle veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. City mayor Geoff Makhubo said that a city council meeting had agreed to the name change over a year ago, and that the road would be renamed ‘in time’ following the public participation process and confirmation with Madikizela-Mandela’s family.
William Nicol Drive was named after the Dutch-Reformed minister and Transvaal administrator at the time of its construction.Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s would have turned 84th this year
