Birthdays do make you reflect on your life and mortality, and this year it's a big one.
Today I look back over the years and, frankly, I'm pleased with my journey — it's surprised me how well it's worked out. It wasn't a life full of financial riches, even though I've had a few wins from time to time; I'm more rich in moments, experiences and connections. So I can honestly say I won't die with any regrets.
I'm in my van with my dog Buddy, looking over the harbour in Fremantle, Western Australia, and there's a big old broken-down boat. This boat is no different to people in that regard — in most instances, we last longer with regular maintenance and self-care.
For everyone: whatever you're going through right now, be it a win, success, loss or disappointment, wherever you're at in the cycle, I expect that it will pass. Some things are much harder to overcome than others, but there will always be change, and over time we look back and see that this is the rhythm of life — it goes up and it goes down. None of us are immune to tragedy either, and that comes in many forms. My gut feel is that with better choices, we can make most things just a little bit easier for ourselves and others along the way.
So many friends and loved ones to thank, and my wish is that you all find a sense of hope and purpose.
