They moved the town that I grew up
Just north of
Many years before my time
Better people than I am
Walked along the tops of the old roads
but can’t relate to those that paved them,
poured and smoothed or carved
out of rock already there
A different life a different time
Try but can’t relate to the existence
How much less to that of all who came before
Built from scratch, torn down to build it better
Watered then repotted
Risking roots
In hopes of what might be
Never have felt worthy
Walking these old walls
But never said it
Don’t know that I knew it
These ruins,
I’ve let them down
Whoever moved the old town
Don’t know them
But from walks between their headstones
Limestone, marble white
I don’t know why
Steps lay under water
I’ve been climbing
Still feel so low
Sitting one above the surface
with man’s best friend
Thinking maybe I’m one step away
From breaking out from sinking
