Since it wouldn't be Independence Day without a marathon WHOT broadcast, we present a (just about) complete aircheck of The Brooklyn Station's 11-hour July 4th show from 1984!
It's still technically "early-period" WHOT here, with the fourth-annual celebration of fun and fireworks, but one can clearly hear that the station was growing rapidly at this point (with bigger and better things on the horizon). Jim kicks off the festivities, providing plenty of party music throughout the afternoon. Later on, Hank and Chuck Simpson take the reigns and carry on through the sounds of the Brooklyn fireworks, which back in the 80s could surpass the Gruccis in simple gross tonnage (even though the activity is on the light side this particular year, the sounds of freedom are all around as the unspoken "other" star of all Fourth of July shows).
As is usually the way with marathon broadcasts, there is plenty of wild fun to carry the day (and evening), with plenty of listeners calling in and silliness in the studio, including some guitar jams and station shenanigans - discussions about the upcoming WHOT Night at Shea Stadium, a whole lot of patriotism, and of course, the greatest music of all time in this unscoped tape.
Sure, things are crazy just about all the time these days it seems, so why not turn back the clock and celebrate America's 208th Birthday with your buddy pals at the good old Brooklyn station. Fireworks are optional, but I do heartily recommend some sunscreen if pooling it while cranking up the sounds. Happy Birthday, America! 

Going into the summer of 1989, the goal of The Brooklyn Station was to push the (pirate) envelope. We'd already planned an ambitious schedule called "The 91-and-a-half Days of Summer" to kick off in early June. As Memorial Day approached (which was always a big weekend of broadcasting for The Hot One), we decided to try something that had never been done before - a show OUTSIDE of the studio. After working out the logistics, WHOT ventured into unchartered territory with a Memorial Day BBQ broadcast, complete with food, friends, fans and fun - and several types of beverages.  More than anything else, this show was a test to see if we COULD do something outside the studio. All things considered, it went very well. More here than usual, this show is just us spending time with the listeners. You can hear the grill sizzling, silly stories, enjoy some kebabs, do some shots, and other general silliness. There's also amazing feats by the WHOT staff - there are magic tricks without mirrors, a staff member manages to eat a chicken leg without using any hands, and not surprisingly, an overabundance of the aforementioned tasty beverages. There's even guitars and a singalong around the fire. Later, back at the studio, we wrap up the show by winding down, and reveal the source of some prank calls we'd been getting on the air line (courtesy one of our "regular listeners"). Even the latest news of the day makes an appearance towards the end of the program. Of course, this is something we'd planned on doing AGAIN - but the FCC bust later that summer put the kibosh on that. A few notes about this posting: there IS some 'Not Safe For Work' content on this aircheck, so be advised! Also, there still appears to be about 90 minutes of this broadcast missing that we hope will pop up one day. We've restored the original scoped tapes that we DO have back to full length so you can hear as much of the show as possible. What would New Year's Eve be without a wild and wooly, mad and merry WHOT broadcast? This particular show was a REAL marathon affair, lasting over FIFTEEN hours. Unfortunately, the first six-plus hours have gone missing over the years (but I am optimistic the tapes may show up one day). No worries, we've gone ahead and restored the music back into the the scoped tapes we DO have, bringing you almost nine-and-a-half hours of frantic fun! Now you can easily party along with The Brooklyn Station as we ring in the New Year! As always, there's a separate celebration for each time zone, with a chaotic gathering in the studio that brings the listener into the wildest party they've ever attended! Sometimes these shows would get a little out of hand, and this one is no exception! Special guest Nick O'Brian from B91 stops by to add a little extra madness to the proceedings, and Hank imbibes a wee bit too much on what he remembers as being a "very OLD bottle of wine" (resulting in the first known live double-reversal of fortune in broadcast history!). As Howard might say, "it's just insanity" - and this time around he'd be totally correct! Get ready to tie one on, 1980s-style. Maybe you should stick to safer things like champagne if you can - you've been warned! Cheers!

It was Christmas time at The Hot One, and this was the rarest of broadcast breeds - an actual Christmas Eve (Eve) Snow Show! In fact, it was one of the few Christmases in the 1980s where there was actual snow on the ground, and The Brooklyn Station was on the air to partake of the festive holiday joy! It's a joyous night of broadcasting as Hank had returned from points north with a bevy of sodas in glass bottles to share and spread cheer; there are lots of new records to spin, as the record library continued to grow in leaps and bounds; the Hank and Jim Christmas songs were brand new and being played for (probably) just the second time; an the phones were ringing and the carols were singing! It is a lovely slice of WHOT from the early years, presented in it's entirety for your Christmas-listening pleasure. Enjoy!

This time around we have a very unique WHOT classic broadcast for you! One night back in the early days of The Brooklyn Station, Hank and Jim decided to take the listeners out on location to see what their favorite Pirate DJs did when the station WASN'T on the air! The result was "WHOT On The Road" - a special show featuring the fellas out and about in the Hotmobile, driving around Brooklyn, going to some famous landmarks (and some infamous ones!) and showing the OTHER side of The Hot One! Among the places listeners are taken to include a late-summer trip to Coney Island for a ride on the Cyclone with Hank; a trip to Nathan's for a frankfurter or two; the 69th Street Pier; the Knapp Street Sewage Treatment Plant (always an experience); a peek at the late-night goings-on down at Plum Beach; and plenty of surprises along the way. Naturally, there's a flat tire that needs to be dealt with, a stay at Hank's for some Intellivision action between Hank and Jim; a tour of the seedier side of Brooklyn; and a stop at an actual Brooklyn Diner. Sadly, the original aircheck of this program no longer exists, but with the discovery of one of the original work tapes from the pre-recorded portion of the show, we were able to restore as much as we could so you could hear how the broadcast originally sounded way back in 1981. So set a bit of time aside and prepare for a cruise around Brooklyn of 1981 with your tour guides, Hank and Jim. Don't forget to buckle up - and enjoy!
