Julie and I have been friends for about 2 years and met because a mutual friend noticed our bellies were the same size (AKA we were pregnancy pals). Our friendship story comes from a person, let’s call her Paloma — a former summer camp counselor with an open door for a friend who’s left her calls unanswered.

Welcome to the first ever episode of Why Can’t We Be Friends! I’m Lillian Li and I’m kind of obsessed with friendships and friend breakups. I wrote an entire novel, BAD ASIANS, centered on a huge friend breakup, and it’s a topic I feel like so many people share, but also one that not that many people talk about, even though these breakups can be as hard, or sometimes harder, than a romantic breakup.

So I started this podcast, where every episode I take a friendship breakup story shared by an anonymous volunteer, and I go through it with one of my dearest friends: from the conflict to the resolution to the reflections. Throughout we also share our friendship highs and lows.

Today, my guest is Sam Krowchenko, a writer, a bookseller, my friend for 11 years, and my husband for 2. Our friendship breakup story comes from a man I’ll call Peter, who is 88-years-young, a true social butterfly whom I met swimming at a local pond.
