Trip Hacks DC

Why Circulator Bus Closed (And Who is Responsible)

Listen Later

At the end of 2024, the DC Circulator bus carried its final passengers. The entire bus system is now shut down, a decision that has understandably upset many locals and tourists alike.

In this episode, Rob breaks down who operated the Circulator bus system during its nearly 20-year run and what led to the decision to end it. He also dives into who holds jurisdiction over many of Washington, DC’s major tourist sites, from the National Mall to the Smithsonian museums to concession stands and gift stores. Rob explains the differences between the federal government and the local DC government, shedding light on why things in the city work the way they do.

This episode is a little wonky and kind of nerdy, but it will make you a smarter traveler. When things go well, you’ll know who to thank, and when they don’t, you’ll know exactly where to direct your frustration.
