Tony: hello and welcome to the first podcast of the three techs. I’m your host, Tony Tang, and I’m with my cohost tonight, Bob Fairbury. And Hey Bob.

Bob: Hey Tony. Good evening.

Tony: Good evening. Well, this is pretty exciting. Our first podcast is actually a result of a technical pho PI guests of mine. I, we were going to shoot a different show tonight, but the equipment.

Didn’t quite work out. So we decided to do an audio podcast instead. So welcome to our first audio podcast. And I thought that a good topic for this first podcast would be to talk about pocket cameras, small pocket cameras that you can carry around with you that nobody really seems to carry anymore. You know, the market has definitely dwindled in the last decade or so with the rise of smartphones that everybody already has.

And. You know, people are pretty used to just carrying those and using those as their primary camera these days. Right? Bob.

Bob: Oh yeah, it’s good. And it’s sad at the same time because people are taking more pictures and enter capture, probably capturing more moments and how they’re sharing them as broader, because you could just push a button and share it and stuff like that.

They may not be printing as many, but there’s a lot more cameras out there. They’re just not separate from our phones.

Tony: Right. And with the advent of some of the computational photography, the builtin high dynamic range photographs that you get automatically, just when you take a picture with your phone. I mean, it’s pretty impressive what you can get with your smartphone these days.

So I could understand why, you know, there is no desire to buy a pocket camera, separate device and carry it around with you when you can have everything in your smartphone. But, so that’s kinda what I wanted to talk about tonight. Bob is. Is there still a market for small pocket cameras. And if so, who is it for?

What is it?

Bob: I still use a couple of pocket cameras. One of them is a very specific use camera after I, uh, dropped a good camera in a Lake. I carry this little Olympus tough. TG tracker with me, which is fully waterproof, submersible, all that kind of stuff. I mess up all the time, but, and it’s got a GPS receiver in it.

So I get location, data and stuff. It’s a great little waterproof, small camera to have with you all the time, but it’s very, a very specific use case. So if you’re out in canoe or something like that, that works really, really well. But. When I go on vacation or I’m out with the family, I sometimes like to have a more capable camera with me.

What have you in the past use yours for and what do you do with today?

Tony: Well on the past, like you said, on vacations, I would take a small pocket camera and it’s ...
