My Mom Died

Why It Feels Like You Lost Both Parents When Only One Died

Listen Later

Nobody talks about what happens to your surviving parent after you lose one. In this episode of My Mom Died, Gabri Segui finally opens up about watching her dad grieve her mom, prompted by a text he sent asking why she never talks about his grief. She shares the story of how her parents met at 14, were together 40 years, and what it has been like to watch her dad go from the goofy Arthur-watching guy he used to be to someone she barely recognizes. She also talks about the difference between supporting someone and trying to save them, why someone else's grief is not yours to carry, and how compassion for another person does not require you to abandon yourself.
