Why It’s Hard To Get Deep?

[46] “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? [47] As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. [48] They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. [49] But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
Luke 6:46-49 NIV

Jesus uses this parable to show us that having a foundation for our lives that is strong, stable, and able to withstand any storm requires depth. By digging down deep, we start the process toward having a faith in God that is not easily shaken. However, depth takes work. It is not a personality trait or a natural talent, but rather a skill that must be worked at and developed over time.

When our goal is to look good and feel good about ourselves, we will skip over this necessary work, and end up like the man who build his house with no foundation. We need God and friends to help us overcome our fear, denial, and avoidance of depth if we are going to have a strong faith that makes a difference.
