It won't be perfect but children must be protected: That's how the Shadow Communications Minister David Coleman has described the passage of the world's first laws to ban social media for children under 16, after the Coalition supported Labor's bill.

Meta and Snap have issued statements in response, saying they remain concerned about the implementation of the ban but will respect Australian laws.

There were however dissenting voices within the Coalition, including Nationals Senator Matt Canavan.
