Why More Blacks Need Psychotherapy

From Black Lives Matter to Coronavirus, current events across the globe are taking its toll on the mental health of black people. Many of these events have reopened a psychological wound for black people and revealed unique challenges within mental health services.

The constant theme heard in the African community is, "I am drained, tired, and exhausted". In the Black community, seeking mental health services is often shunned, which only magnifies the stigma associated with seeking mental health services. Complicating matters is the fact that in the US and the UK, the majority of counselors and psychotherapists are white. Coupled with the high financial costs of services, many may be less inclined to access services because of the therapist’s perceived lack of understanding when it comes to culture or the black experience.

Tune into this powerful podcast episode to learn 1) why you should seek mental health services; 2) how to identify when it's necessary to go; and 3) what questions you need to ask. Additional resources are provided in the podcast for you to enrich your knowledge base with some of the expert black psychotherapists.
