The US federal government has officially shut down for the first time in seven years after a bitter deadlock between Republicans and Democrats over spending bills.

US Correspondent Johnathan Kersley joined Jason Matthews to discuss this political logjam and how it leaves hundreds of thousands of federal workers and military personnel on unpaid leave.
