I have spent forty-five years in other people's houses fixing things that were not my problem.
Not the air conditioner. The air conditioner is my problem. That is what they called me for. I mean the conversation that was already going when I walked in, the breaker box that someone double-tapped years ago and pretended was code, the marriage that was thinning out across the kitchen table while I was kneeling at the air handler.
A man knocks on enough doors and he learns that the system he was hired to fix is sitting inside a system that is also broken. Nobody asked him to look at that bigger system. They asked him about the AC. But he looks anyway. Because that is how he is built.
There is a name for what runs underneath that. Stephen Karpman wrote about it in 1968. He called it the rescuer role. The person who solves problems that were not handed to him. Who helps people who did not ask. Who needs the problem to be there in order to know what he is for.
I have lived with that wiring my whole career. I have watched good men in this trade burn out at fifty-five because they could not learn to let go of problems they were not hired to solve. I am sixty-three. I am still working on it.
