Why You Underachieve

Listen Later

Susan Winebrenner defines “underachievement” as “a discrepancy between capability and achievement.”

Teaching Gifted Kids in the Regular Classroom by Susan Winebrenner.

Underachievement can be caused or affected by these factors:

  • perfectionism
  • work that is too easy or too difficult
  • lack of opportunity to use one’s learning style or strengths
  • lack of opportunity to pursue one’s passions
  • resistance to learning things that are arbitrary or irrelevant to one’s life
  • fear of being rejected for being different
  • lack of dreams or goals perceived to be attainable
  • family interaction patterns that interfere with learning
  •

    Here’s my definition of underachievement:

“The gap between a person’s gifts, talents, passions, and strengths and the results they really want to create in their lives.”

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • Where are you “underachieving” in your life?
  • Which gifts and talents are you currently not prioritizing?
  • What passions really light you up?
