Join a conversation with a couple folks with boots on the ground related to the Ely area community’s response to the “July 2026 Lightning Incident," a complex of wildfires in the BWCA Wilderness and beyond that have initiated ready-set-go evacuation protocol for many of our friends and neighbors.  

Bria Schurke is an emergency medicine physician assistant who was born and raised in Ely. Her diverse career includes a stints as a wildland firefighter, wilderness guide, and time abroad working in public health. 

Megan Wind is the creative content manager for Save the Boundary Waters. She has been creating visual content and translating complex messages clearly across various communication mediums for a decade. She moved to Ely four years ago. 

Bria and Megan are two members of a team of people who formed the Ely Community Response as a way to help Ely area residents respond to the wildfires.
