We tend to overlook the account of the wise men as they have become commonplace at Christmas. Yet the Bible teaches us something profound concerning this band come from afar; both in their attitude towards this infant child and their gifts fit for a King.

We live in a world of broken promises. It seems that everyone is doing whatever they can to get one over on us. This can make us jaded and cynical. But there is One who will never break a promise. Our God is a promise-keeping God and fulfilled His promise to Abraham when He sent His Son in the form of a baby. Jesus is the proof that our God is trustworthy, and we are right to put 100% confidence in Him!

From the time of his birth to his final breath the scriptures reveal the amazing humility of our savior. That he would humble himself, even to the point dying on a cross, is an incredible and unfathomable truth. The wonderful display of Christ humility should bring us to our knees in worship of him.

Real life doesn’t change because we hang up twinkling Christmas lights. People’s problems don’t go away because we sing Christmas carols instead of worship songs on Sunday mornings. And that in no way diminishes the real meaning of Christmas. In fact, that’s why we have Christmas in the first place. This is the glorious reality of Christmas; God came to us. We begin our advent series Do You See What I See? with this wonderful truth found in John 1, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We hope you’ll be blessed as you celebrate the greatest gift of all time – God in the flesh!

Suffering is a normal part of the Christian experience. But there is hope for us because nothing can separate us from the Lord of God! As you enter the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, you might feel more intensely the dichotomy of emotions – joy of the season mixed with pain, sadness, confusion, frustration of normal life. It’s ok to feel them both, but what you do with them and where you let them take you matters.

Do you struggle with regret? Do you live in shame? Do you feel stuck? We invite you to listen to this sermon and find freedom in Christ! Sometimes the Lord uses our pain and suffering for someone else’s benefit. Sometimes He allows us to go through difficult times and seasons in order to help other people. It’s hard to think that my pain might be someone else’s gain, but that is the example Jesus set and he did call us to follow Him. Though it might be hard to embrace, once we do, we learn that it’s really a blessing to be used by the Lord for someone else’s good; even if it means we have to endure hardship to get there.
