Publisher's Summary:
A missing teenager, drugs, yachts, the sex trade and a cold trail that leads from Sydney to Norfolk Island, Byron Bay and Coolangatta. Will one man's loss be Hardy's gain?
'I'd read about it in the papers, heard the radio reports and seen the TV coverage and then forgotten about it, the way you do with news stories.'
The police suspect the father, Gerard Fonteyn OA, a wealthy businessman. But he's hired Cliff to find his daughter, given him unlimited expenses and posted a $250,000 reward for information.
Finally there's a break - an unconfirmed sighting of Juliana Fonteyn, alive and well. But as usual, nothing is straightforward. Various other players are in the game - and Cliff doesn't know the rules, or even what the game might be. He's determined to find out, and as the bodies mount up, the danger to himself and to Juliana increases.

Cliff's Final Case
I have always been a fan of the Cliff Hardy series of crime novels. There is something appealing about Cliff; his laconic sense of humour and his knock about street sense. The novels are also quintessentially Sydney. The harbour city is the backdrop. Peter Corris brings the city to life. I can almost smell the sea air and the inner city grunge. Corris is the master story teller for his adopted city.
In âWin, Lose or Drawâ, Cliff is asked to find the missing teenage daughter of a very successful business man from Sydneyâs wealthy eastern suburbs. The trail leads him from Sydney to Norfolk Island, then the Gold Coast of Queensland before finally returning to Sydney for the storyâs denouement. Along the way, Cliff meets with a selection of the seedy and the dangerous. Indeed, he almost meets his own end before finally wrapping up matters.
As it turns out, this will be the 42nd and final book in the Cliff Hardy series. Peter Corris is slowly succumbing to blindness and will no longer be able to write. Itâs clear that this decision was made subsequent to the publication of âWin, Lose or Drawâ. The novel has no maudlin endings and there is no attempt to tie up any lose ends from the distant past. Rather, the reader is taken on another rollicking journey with Cliff.
âWin, Lose or Drawâ is one of the best from Peter Corris. I say this without any sense of things coming to an end. Highly recommended.
Cliff Harry's last hurrah
I've given this book three stars which might be one more than it deserves, but Cliff gives a good account of himself as usual and his adventures are always entertaining. He's a very likeable character and his heart is nearly always in the right place.
Cliff at his best
As he's grown older, Hardy uses his brain more often than his fists. I've enjoyed reading this series for 35 years now and feel I've grown up with him. Thanks Peter Corris for a great read, a great character and a magnificentseries.
