Superstars and Role Players (ft. Joel Goldberg)
How every role on the roster has the power to become a leader
OPENING QUOTE:
“When I have a job to do every single day, I have energy to bring every single day— whether they're on a 10-game losing streak or a 10-game winning streak and someone, and it's more than one person, even if it's 3:00 in the morning, and it's been all these rain delays. We had a game that finished at 3:14 in the morning once too, and I think I made the mistake of saying, "Is anybody even awake?" My Twitter blew up. Someone's always watching, and as long as someone's always watching, you have a chance to make an impact on their life.” —Joel Goldberg

CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:
[7:13] – Forget What Someone Can Do For You
Don’t start with a sales mindset, start with a people mindset
When Joel meets someone powerful or well-connected, they sometimes suspect that he’ll try to sell them something. But they’re surprised to discover he simply wants to have a conversation, build synergy, and get to know each other. This can be an effective way to build teammates whose value may not be apparent for months or even years. As baseball royalty Albert Pujols once said to Joel: “Everyone wants something from me. Once I trust you, I’ll do anything for you.”
[23:37] – You Don’t Have to be the CEO
Anyone can lead from anywhere
In sports they call them ‘role players’— the non-superstars that nonetheless have an outsized impact on the game, strategy, and culture of the team. It’s an important reminder that even if our name isn’t on the marquee or corner office, we still have the power to have a positive impact on our organization’s culture and success.
[32:46] – Empathy Amidst the Chaos
Ask yourself what someone else is going through
Despite all of the noise, chaos, and politics, during the pandemic we all understood that everybody was going through something, everyone was in this together. Whether we agreed with it or not, life had changed. It was a chance for all of us to refocus on empathy.
[34:50] – Purpose is Not Your Dream
Finding purpose helps you live your dream
Joel shares how it took him a 25-year career to realize that his career itself wasn’t his purpose, it was what the career allowed him to do. Things like broadcasting games to troops in Kuwait who wanted a little taste of home. Your purpose doesn’t have to be directly tied to your work, but your work can be the conduit that leads to your purpose. Just don’t think that it will come alongside the next promotion, the next opportunity, or the next big win.
[40:47] – Learn Something New Every Day
Perpetual education is the key to happiness
The more we learn, the less the world can shake us and the more we can see the beauty in every day. When we stop taking risks, we stop learning and reaching new heights. What can each of us learn about the world that we didn’t know yesterday?
