We are living in a society marked by deep moral confusion and spiritual decline. Therefore, we must hold the line of God’s truth in every sphere. But before we can speak faithfully to the issues of our day, we must adopt a thoroughly biblical understanding of the purpose for mankind, or we will not be able to faithfully navigate these complex issues. As we begin our new series, “Hold the Line,” Pastor Elijah Robertson turns to Genesis 1 to show that mankind was created for the high purpose of knowing and respond to our Creator, and commissioned to reflect His character in the world.

When Jesus’ disciples were deeply anxious in soul, He said to them, “Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Yet how often we believers fail to take this command to heart, needlessly allowing our thoughts, feelings, and circumstances to stir up deep inner turmoil! The command to obey your leaders in Hebrews 13:17 is clear. But this command comes with a lot of baggage in America. On the one hand, culture teaches us to despise authority. On the other, there is the reality that many leaders have used or abused their position. So how should we understand this command and embrace it in our lives?

At the heart of ancient Judaism was the sacrificial system: the continual shedding of blood to atone for the guilt of the people. And at the heart of New Testament Christianity is also a sacrifice—not the blood of bulls and goats, but the precious blood of Christ.
