Last year, I created Wita's Words" is a segment I
created to give back. It was a place for parents/caregivers to feel informed, heard, and welcomed in a world of uncertainty, especially after their child's
diagnosis.
My first guest speaker was Jasmine from @theinclusionspot.
We funnily joked, lets have a wine and both yelled “Wine with Wita”, never did we imagine
it would turn into a reality.
Jasmine is a mother of 3, Olivia, who is 11, AJ- 9, and Jonah- 7, who has complex medical challenges and a profound disability.
She has worn a few different hats over the years, including social worker, photographer and charity founder but no text book could possibly teach her empathy like her own lived experience of caring for a child with a disability.
This experience, coupled with her qualifications and work experience, has placed her in a perfect position to support other families on a similar journey and hold their hand throughout it.
Jasmine wants to be the support she never felt she had as she embarked on the disability parenting journey and knows many families who feel the same way.
Jasmine doesn't promise to have all the answers, but she promises to listen, to be respectful, to advocate, and help you find the answers and navigate the whole process.
She started @theinclusionspot as a way of addressing a gap and envisions a one-stop spot for inclusive services
that exists with not only participants in mind but their carers too.
It was an honour and privilege enjoying a glass and chatting with Jasmine.
Her story is incredibly empowering and relatable to many
families in similar situations.
We discussed her son Jonah's diagnosis, difficulties
accessing services, support, NDIS frustration, and cultural stigma.
The ending surprised us all. However, I guess this is the
reality for many families that situations can change instantly.
It echos the need for additional support.
Thankfully, Jonah is safe and well.
I am sure you will be inspired by Jasmine’s story.
