Pedro "Petey Primo" Medina’s passion for cooking began over 35 years ago, inspired by watching his mother host parties and seeing the joy great food brought to everyone. Although he dreamed of becoming a sous chef, Pedro couldn’t afford culinary school and had to start from the ground up. For more than 20 years, he has traveled across the country exploring diverse cuisines and dedicating countless hours to learning through cooking shows.
After the pandemic hit, Pedro took a bold step and opened a pop-up from his home, serving some of his favorite dishes from his menu. His ultimate goal remains to open his own restaurant and share his culinary vision with more people.

In this powerful segment of Culture Flash, host Nicole takes on the name Akua Njeri to honor the life and work of Deborah Johnson—activist, writer, and Fred Hampton’s partner. As we move from Black History Month into Women’s History Month (and celebrate International Women’s Day), Nicole highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women in movements for civil rights, LGBTQ+ liberation, and cultural expression—from Marsha P. Johnson and bell hooks to the grassroots work of today’s changemakers.
Nicole dives deep into Deborah Johnson’s journey: joining the Illinois Black Panther Party at 19, surviving the December 4th raid, re-naming herself Akua Njeri, raising Fred Hampton’s son, chronicling her experiences in My Life with the Black Panther Party, and leading the December 4th Committee to preserve Fred Hampton’s legacy. She underscores how these histories inform our present fight for basic rights—healthcare, economic justice, and community power—and urges listeners to find ways to get involved locally, stay informed, and keep pushing culture forward.
Guest: Nicole (as Akua Njeri)
