For the 2024 entering class, Yale has offered applicants the option to choose from three prompts: A commitment Essay, an Essay about Community and how you found meaning from it, and an Essay about the most significant challenge you faced and how it shaped you as a person.

Commitment Essay: Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. Why is this Commitment meaningful to you, and what actions have you taken to support it?

Community Essay: Describe the community that has been most meaningful to you. What is the most valuable thing you have gained from being a part of this community and what is the most important thing you have contributed to this community?

Significant Challenge Essay:  Describe the most significant challenge you have faced. How have you confronted this challenge, and how has it shaped you as a person?

Unlike other T10 schools, Tuck has not hinted at DEI for this essay but instead asked you to shortlist and expand on examples that capture relationship building and investment of your time, reputation, or resources, with a clear IMPACT on the beneficiary.

Most companies in Finance or Banking have a culture of encouraging the candidate to join an MBA program. Consulting companies have a long tradition of sponsoring candidates for an MBA. Applicants from Finance feel passionate about numbers. Every deal size is benchmarked against competitors. Every cost saving is mapped against the size of the project and the company. Leadership is often measured by team size. Innovative solutions are measured by the money and the person-hours saved. So it is no wonder that any phrases dedicated to explaining the context of the achievement are often looked at with skepticism.

Here are three rules of thumb to overcome Number Overload in a resume:

1) Keep the Numbers in Each Entry to 3 at the most
2) Use Conservative Estimates for Money Saved Metrics

A professional has three transitions in their career. First is choosing a major, second is the first job, and third is the decision to continue in a technical role or pivot into management or a creative career.

One of the common problems I see with applicants using a professional narrative for the What makes you feel alive Essay is that the example they cite is from a function they are currently in, but the inconsistency is that many are transitioning away from that role post-MBA, or they are looking for larger opportunities in adjacent industries or functions. The example doesn’t hold up.
