Forgive Your EnemiesIn his Sunday sermon, Pastor Sam prepared a fiery sermon, “Forgive Your Enemies,” as his subject. As he was finishing up his sermon, he pleaded with the congregation and asked, “how many are you willing to forgive your enemies?” To Pastor Sam’s amazement, only about half of the congregation held up their hands.

Not satisfied with the response, Pastor Sam went back into his sermon and harangued the congregation for another twenty minutes and repeated his question, “how many are you willing to forgive your enemies?.” The response was better, but still, only eighty percent of the hands were raised. The lack of response lit a fire in Pastor Sam’s belly, and he started back in for fifteen more minutes and repeated his question, “how many are you willing to forgive your enemies?.” Thinking that they may be there all day, everyone raised their hand except for old Mr. Jones in the back pew.

“Mr. Jones, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?”

“I don’t have any enemies, Pastor.”

In a bit of a pompous tone, Pastor Sam asked, “Mr. Jones, that is very unusual. How old are you?”

“One hundred and one.” Mr. Jones replied.

Still not being convinced, Pastor Sam said, “Mr. Jones, please come down in front and tell the congregation how a man can live to be one hundred and one and not have an enemy in the world.”

Old Mr. Jones teetered down the aisle, slowly turned to face the congregation, smiled, and said, “I outlived every one of them!”I hope that brought a smile to your face today. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. Today is Day 1461 of our Trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today’s current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. This week, on our Worldview Wednesday episode, we will continue with our study based on a course I recently completed taught by Dr. Michael Heiser. Our study is titled “Sons and Daughters of God: The Believer’s Identity, Calling, and Destiny” Throughout this multi-week course we will demonstrate that, in the Old Testament, “sons of God” and “holy ones” refers to supernatural beings whose Father is God and who work with God to carry out His will and that this divine family was present before humanity. By fully engaging with biblical texts such as Psalm 82; Psalm 89, and Deuteronomy 32:8–9, our study will show that this divine family functions as a template for God’s human family. God desires of humans, as His imagers, to participate in His council. This study addresses issues such as polytheism, the nature of the (little ‘g’) “gods,” and the uniqueness of Yahweh. Within this study, we will apply insights to the New Testament texts and shows how the metaphor of being in God’s family informs our sense of identity and mission as believers.

Arguments for a Divine Council· Segment 12: Polytheism: Are The Gods Real?

Denying the Reality of the elohim as gods mocks God

Now, aside from trajectories that sort of try to blunt or strip away the supernatural element of the plural elohim, the plural sons of God in the Old Testament, by making them idols or making them people, when we dispense with that, that brings us to a certain set of issues that we have to address. If it’s not those other things, then it must be divine beings. Then typically, what’s asked is, well, maybe this is just sort of imaginative. Perhaps the gods, these other elohim just aren’t real at all.

Biblical Writers Had a Supernatural Worldview

How do we handle that? Because these are biblical writers writing things about these other elohim. Now, we as modern people, we sort of reflexively go to this question, and we sort of assign unreality to these beings. A biblical writer would not do this. A biblical writer is predisposed to supernaturalism. That’s why the Unseen Realm has its subtitle: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible.

Then you might say, “Well, if you are going to say that these gods are real (and I do because the biblical writers do), isn’t that polytheism? Then what about these phrases about ‘there is no other God besides Yahweh of Israel,’ ‘besides Him there is no other,’ these sorts of phrases?”

Denying Reality of the Elohim Mocks GodSo this is the territory that we need to cover now. What we’ve already established has God’s members of His council as spirit beings. There are other ways to discern that and discern God’s relationship to them. I would suggest this. We’ll start here: that if you are going to deny that the other elohim, the members of God’s council, if you’re going to say they are not real, then doing that actually mocks God because God is going to be described as being above these other elohim, as being the elohim of elohim, the God of gods.

If those beings don’t really exist, there is no glory for God to be had there. In fact, it makes God a caricature. These sorts of statements that...

We are continuing our series this week on Meditation Monday as we focus on Mastering Bible Study through a series of brief insights from Hebrew Scholar, Dr. Michael S. Heiser. Our first few insights will focus on study habits to build a strong foundation. Today let us meditate on…

Bible Study – Its Aim Is Not Ignorance· Insight Thirteen: The Aim of Bible Study is the Meaning of the Text, Not a Defense of Your View

The Bible is God’s Word—a repository of truths and information that, through human authors, God wanted to be preserved for posterity. Since the Bible is one of God’s means to transform our lives and direct our behavior, those who hold it in esteem have an emotional investment in it. They believe that it’s the expression of God’s will, not only for faith but also practice (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Given all that’s riding on Bible study, it’s not hard to see why people who engage in it seriously sometimes argue about the results. Disagreements aren’t about an intellectual victory. Right and wrong are at stake; at least that’s the ideal. Sometimes that’s accurate. Other times it’s exaggerated.

Knowing precisely what the Bible means at every turn would require omniscience. Several passages are ambiguous. God knows omniscience isn’t an attribute we possess. Consequently, assigning a point of morality to every interpretive decision is unwise. It may sound sacrilegious, but a lot of the Bible—and hence, Bible study—doesn’t have a moral issue in view.

I’ve met many Christians who are so desperate to make sure their behavior is right and not wrong that they end up becoming better at arguing for what their family or tradition tells them a verse means than actually studying the matter for themselves. I’ve seen relationships destroyed over conflicting Bible interpretations where no core doctrinal teaching was at stake. I’ve seen believers driven to despair when friends or family members make an interpretation a litmus test for good standing before them and even before God.

The goal of Bible study shouldn’t be about finding ammunition to make someone guilty or shaming someone on the other side of a disagreement. It isn’t about finding ways to crush opposition or force a spiritual submission. You aren’t the Holy Spirit. It’s often better to kindly share what you believe and its basis in Scripture and then privately take your concerns to the Lord.

To keep with our theme of “Ask Gramps,” I will put our weekly topics in the form of a question to get us on track. So this week’s question is, Hey Gramps, technological advances are moving so quickly. With the world population growing briskly, how will technology impact food in the future?

The Future of Food (Part 2)Last week we focused on the first part of how exponential technologies are impacting food production. This week we will continue exploring how food production is changing rapidly. I am using some of the information mentioned in Peter Diamandis’s blogs and book “The Future is Faster Than You Think.”

Could a hamburger grown in a lab from Kobe beef stem cells be cheaper, better tasting, and healthier for you?

Can you imagine a future where millions of square miles of pastoral land are reclaimed by nature, creating new forests and revitalizing the Earth’s vital oxygen making?

Last week, we discussed the hyper-efficient food production systems of 2030. This week, we continue that discussion, but from a different perspective—because by the end of the next decade, we may witness the end of industrial animal agriculture as we know it.

Through the convergence of biotechnology and AgTech, we will witness the birth of the most ethical, nutritious, and environmentally sustainable food system ever devised by humankind.

Let’s dive in.

· Cultured MeatMeat production is often problematic. A quarter of the planet’s available landmass is currently used to keep 20 billion chickens, 1.5 billion cattle, and 1 billion sheep alive—that is, until we can kill them and eat them. We also have to deal with all of the waste and by-products associated with the butchering of animals.

Here are some statistics that will open your eyes. One out of seven Americans will go to bed hungry tonight, yet farm animals consume 30 percent of the world’s food crops. It is much more exaggerated in most developing countries. Worse is the water involved. Meat production accounts for 70 percent of global water use. Compared to 1,500 liters required to produce a kilogram of wheat, it takes 15,000 liters to produce a kilogram of beef, meaning there’s enough water in an adult steer to float a U.S. Navy destroyer. While this next statistic may be debatable, it is projected that meat production is also responsible for 14.5 percent of all greenhouse gases and a considerable portion of our deforestation problem as land is cleared for pastures.

So what is the solution as meat consumption continues to rise throughout the world? One answer is cultured meat, which is meat that is grown from a few cells into a full-blown steak....

I Can’t Believe It!Sam seemed to be late for just about everything. As was his habit, Sam was running a little behind schedule when he arrives at the movie theater to watch a movie that he was really looking forward to it. Although Sam was late, he figured maybe the previews were still playing, so he goes in to watch the movie that has already started. He sat there for several minutes, allowing his eyes to adjust to the darkness and immediately became engrossed in the movie. After a few minutes, he was surprised to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead of him. Sam noticed that the dog was actually intently watching the movie.

The dog even seemed to be enjoying the movie: he was wagging its tail in the happy parts of the movie, drooping its ears at the sad parts, and hiding his eyes with its paws at the scary parts. Sam was so intrigued that it was getting hard to pay attention to the movie.

After the movie, Sam approached the dog's owner and exclaimed, “Wow, your dog really seemed to enjoy the movie. I'm amazed!”

The owner looked at Sam with a proud look on his face and said, “Yes, I can't believe it myself. He hated the book.”I hope that brought a smile to your face today. Additional Objections To The Heavenly Council· Segment 10: Are References Just People or Specifically Jews?Who Comprises the Heavenly Council?

In previous weeks we explored if the council of God referred to the trinity or idols. Neither of those options were logical or based on Scripture. One of the other options when people raise the following questions, “Well, maybe these plural elohim aren’t really divine beings; they’re not really gods.” “Maybe they are something else. Maybe they are people.” “Maybe Psalm 82 has God talking to a council of leaders, Jewish leaders, elders, Israelites, you know, some human beings here.”

Coming from the Spiritual World

Now, we’ve already seen specific arguments in addressing other questions that are going to make this option very troublesome. Frankly, making this option impossible. In Psalm 89, the council of God, the council of His sons. In Psalm 82:6, the sons of God, the sons of the Most High. Those two psalms using sonship language very plainly—this council of God’s children in Psalm 89 is in the skies; it’s in the heavenly realms, the spiritual realm.

First Kings 22: Micaiah is looking into the throne room of God. Micaiah sees a vision of the spiritual world. It’s the same thing with Daniel 4 and Daniel 7. In these passages, these beings come from the spiritual world, not earth. That alone would rule out the trajectory that God is really talking to people here.

Dominant View: Humans

You can read your Bible from cover to cover, and you’re never going to come up with a group of Jewish people ruling with God in the skies. It just doesn’t make any sense. There is a reason behind why I am bringing this up because this is actually, believe it or not—even though after the little bit we have discussed here, it sounds a bit absurd—this is actually kind of a dominant view in commentaries and other sources for Psalm 82.

Again, it’s because people are troubled by having multiple elohim in the spiritual world. You might be listening to that and saying, “What’s the trouble? It’s a heavenly host.” I understand...

Our Past Creates Our FutureThree primary mindsets influence a person's outlook on life. Some people are past-oriented, and most decisions made are influenced strongly by what happened in the past. Some people are present-oriented, and current circumstances strongly influence most decisions, that is what is happening now. The remainder of the people are future-oriented, and most decisions are made from the perspective of what could be in the future. I tend to be very future-oriented, and do not allow what happened in the past, or my current situation to hinder what I think is a future possibility. Regardless of what perspective is dominant in your decision making, all of us are bound by our past. We cannot deny being strongly influenced by circumstances and experiences that make us who we are today. Our history is both positive and negative. The negative aspects of our past need to be our tutors which help us to make wise decisions in the future. The positive aspects of our history need to be our sage advisers allowing us to build on that strong foundation, which will enable us to excel and impact others as we build God’s kingdom here on earth. Regardless of your primary outlook on life and decision making, know that whatever baggage we bring with us from the past, whether it be good or ill, we can learn from it to be better tomorrow than we are today. Life is a trek, and each day that we live is another opportunity to be who God destined us to be.

Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, Meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and in prayer. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and making sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you, too, will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind.

We are continuing our series this week on Meditation Monday as we focus on Mastering Bible Study through a series of brief insights from Hebrew Scholar, Dr. Michael S. Heiser. Our first few insights will focus on study habits to build a strong foundation. Today let us meditate on:

Bible Study – Getting it Right Through Action· Insight Eleven: Bible Study Is Not Like MarriageEvery reader who is married knows that marriage is an adjustment. Although Paula and I have had very few issues in our marriage, the honeymoon phase does indeed end. Couples may love each other, but conflict eventually surfaces. One piece of sage advice for handling conflicts that I have read at various times is offered in the form of a question: Do you want to be happy, or do you want to be right? I suspect that you catch the meaning. Winning a debate and making your spouse happy aren’t interchangeable ideas.

While this advice works well for marital bliss, it doesn’t work for Bible study. When it comes to interpreting Scripture, you want to be right. Flawed analysis and poorly formed conclusions about what the Bible says aren’t going to produce Bible study bliss. In the long run of our spiritual lives, getting warm and fuzzy feelings from a misunderstood passage is far less desirable than grasping the text accurately without a wave of emotion sweeping over us.

The same can be said about having your own theological comfort zone as your goal for Bible study. If we believe the text is inspired, we need to be subservient to what it says, even when our efforts produce results that conflict with what we’ve been taught to believe. If we’re teaching others, our goal cannot be keeping people happy with what we discover are flawed beliefs and interpretations. Bible study is meaningless if we aren’t striving to understand God’s Word correctly.

So remember that you aren’t practicing marital diplomacy when you study Scripture. Think critically. Be tenacious. Demand clarity. Giving in isn’t going to make God happy. He wants you to wrestle with his Word and get it right.

· Insight Twelve: “Study” is a VerbDr. Heiser shares that before he decided to go to graduate school, he spent some time in seminary. One of his professors was known for his memorable phrases. One of his off-the-cuff quips has stuck with Dr. Heiser for decades: “If you don’t think the ministry is hard work, you aren’t in it.” As with most professional careers, they are hard work. While I never went into the pastorate, this phrase rings through the corridors of my mind whenever I think about Bible study. It lends itself to a suitable adaptation: If you don’t think Bible study is work, you aren’t doing it.

My personality is one that has always been very future-oriented. Since my childhood, I have yearned for the exploration and discovery of new technologies and advancements for the future. I grew up with the original Star Trek series, and even today, while I am on my 64th revolution around the sun, I still dream of traveling in space. Each week we will explore rapidly converging technologies and advancements, which will radically change our lives. At times, the topics may sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but each area that we explore is already well on its way of becoming a reality over the next couple of decades.

To keep with our theme of “Ask Gramps,” I will put our weekly topics in the form of a question to get us on track. So this week’s question is, Hey Gramps, technological advances are moving so quickly. With the world population growing briskly, how will technology impact food in the future?

The Future of Food (Part 1)Last week we focused on the implication and opportunity of AR. Our world is in a disruptive mode, which will speed up the exponential technology that is changing our world today. One area we see rapid change is in our food production, which is our focus for this week and next. I am using some of the information mentioned in Peter Diamandis’s blogs and book “The Future is Faster Than You Think.”

Food… What we eat and how we grow it will be fundamentally transformed in the next decade. Already, vertical farming is projected to exceed a US$12 billion industry by mid-decade, surging at an astonishing 25 percent annual growth rate. Meanwhile, the food 3D printing industry is expected to grow at an even higher rate, averaging nearly 40 percent annual growth.

Converging exponential technologies—from materials science to AI-driven digital agriculture—are not slowing down. Today’s breakthroughs will soon allow our planet to boost its food production by nearly 70 percent, using a fraction of the real estate and resources, to feed 9 billion by mid-century.

What you consume, how it was grown, and how it will end up in your stomach will all ride the wave of converging exponentials, revolutionizing the most basic of human needs.

· Printing Food3D printing has already had a profound impact on the manufacturing sector. We are now able to print in hundreds of different materials, making anything from toys to houses to organs. However, we finally see the emergence of 3D printers that can print food itself.

A company called Redefine Meat, an Israeli startup, wants to tackle industrial meat production using 3D printers that can generate meat, no animals required. The printer takes in fat, water, and three different plant protein sources, using these ingredients to print a meat fiber matrix with trapped fat and water, thus mimicking the texture and flavor of real meat. Slated for release in 2020, at the cost of $100,000, their machines are rapidly demonetizing and will begin by targeting clients in industrial-scale meat production.

Another company, Anrich3D, aims to take this process a step further, 3D-printing meals that are customized to your medical records, health data from your smart wearables, and patterns detected by your sleep trackers. The company plans to use multiple extruders for...
