God's Good News Always Begins With a Servant – Meditation Monday

Thank you for joining us for our five days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 784 of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday.  Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy.

For some, it may just be a time alone for quiet reflection. Some may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and praying. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and make sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you too will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind.

We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. It has been an extremely busy month of traveling, Christmas celebrations, and client work. Just when we thought we would be able to remain in Marietta for a few weeks, we found out that Paula’s Aunt Pauline has had a downturn in her health, so we are heading back to Fort Myers this week to help Aunt Pauline move from her senior apartment to an assisted living facility.

We visited her the last week of December and celebrated her 90th birthday with her but did not anticipate that we would have to return so quickly. We are thankful that we can serve in this manner. Service to others should be what drives us on each day. It helps to get our mind off ourselves and on what is truly important in life. Today let us reflect on a person whose entire life’s trek or purpose for life was to prepare the world to receive the Messiah…

God's Good News Always Begins with a Servant

I love the way Mark begins his good news story about Jesus Christ in Mark 1:1-4.

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

“I will send my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way”

“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,

‘Prepare the way for the Lord,

make straight paths for him.’”

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

This introduction is Mark's way of saying that Jesus’s ministry, Jesus’s whole story, begins with a servant — and this servant's name is John the Baptizer. There are no birth stories about Jesus in Mark. Nothing about His childhood is written in Mark. There are no genealogies that tell about Jesus’s ancestry. Mark is clear, purposeful, and to the point: for people to hear and believe the good news about Jesus, God most frequently uses those who offer themselves to Him to be servants so others can believe. That's why in God’s Kingdom, the greatest is always a servant. As He said during His earthly ministry in Matthew 23:11-12, "The greatest among you will be your servant.  For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Just as John the Baptizer was a servant who prepared the hearts of others to know Jesus, please know that you are to have that same role in the lives of your friends and family. For the good news about Jesus to reach the hearts of your friends, associates, and family, they must know that you do what you do for them because of your love for Jesus as well as for them.

Let’s back up and reread Mark 1:1-4 and continue through verse 8.

· John the Baptist Prepares the Way

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

God Is Always In Control (2) - Ask Gramps

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 783 of our trek, and it is time for our Philosophy Friday series. Each Friday we will ponder some of the basic truths and mysteries of life and how they can impact us in creating our living legacy. Due to a heavy travel and activity-filled schedule for the past three weeks, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them in advance of this time.

As we continue into this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored the first part of God Is Always In Control, and today’s we will finish this attribute.

God is Always in Control (2)

· God's control of nations follows.

God fixed the boundaries for the peoples of the world.

He can make a nation large or small.

In the affairs of the world and its rulers, the Lord puts down one leader and lifts up another.

He uses heathen nations to accomplish the disciplining of His disobedient people

So far as it has suited His purposes, He has allowed nations to go their own way.

Behind the strange and sometimes unexpectedly generous actions of unbelieving rulers towards God's people at various times is the working of God in their hearts without their knowledge. Examples are Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, and Artaxerxes. They pursued their own chosen paths, and it served the furtherance of God's will, though in their personal lives they were disobedient, self-willed, and sinful.

· God's control of history follows.

His dominion is everlasting, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation, thus all the events of human history are under His direct control.

He fixes the epochs of human history and the limits of human territory. "From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries," Acts 17:26.

God is at work in unrecognized events and processes to achieve His purposes of blessing. It was the Lord who sent Joseph ahead of his brothers to Egypt. It was the Lord who turned the hearts of the Egyptians to hate God's people. It was the Lord who called Cyrus, a heathen ruler, “His anointed” because He was going to use him to accomplish His will for His people.

The outstanding example of God at work in an event to achieve His will - unrecognized at first - was the the Cross. "But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him," Acts 2:23.

In all the events of history, God is working out His purpose of calling into one body, the Church, men and women of every nation and people, saved through His Son Jesus Christ.

· God's control of all circumstances follows.

God, not chance, decides what happens in human affairs.

Behind every circumstance is the Lord.

He can shorten life or lengthen it.

The Lord brings both prosperity and disaster. Success and victory in battle and the ability to get wealth are from Him. He has the power to bring illness or to remove it. Ordinary daily needs are within His concern and control.

God is always in control of everything…let us never forget this and His love for us.

Monday we will return to our regular Wisdom-Trek episodes with Meditation Monday, where we will take time to meditate and renew our minds. Thank you for joining me on this trek called life.

God Is Always In Control (1) – Wisdom Unplugged

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 782 of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. Due to a heavy travel and activity-filled schedule for the past three weeks, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them.

As we continue with this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored that God Never Changes. Today and tomorrow our attribute is...

God Is Always In Control

God controls all things, working out everything in conformity with the plan and purpose of His own will.

· God's control extends to the whole universe.

He is the only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords. For "at just the right time, Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords," 1 Timothy 6:15.

His throne is in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all.

He sustains the whole universe by His powerful word.

The government of the entire universe is His

· God's control of nature follows.

All natural forces are in His control.

The elements are at His command.

All the processes of nature are at His direction.

It is the Lord who provides the sun to light the day

and the moon and stars to light the night,

and who stirs the sea into roaring waves.

His name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.  - Jeremiah 31:35

· God's control of His creatures follows.

His care, for example, extends to the smallest of His creatures. He gives the beasts their food.

Not a single sparrow falls to the ground apart from His will, "What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it," Matthew 10:29.

He can appoint all His creatures to perform His will even for ravens to convey bread and meat to His servants.

· God's control of human beings - and of evil individuals -follows.

There are occasions when God, desiring to show His wrath and to make known His power, has put up with evil individuals due for destruction. His purpose has been to make known the riches of His glory to those whom He has purposed to save.

Sometimes God sees to it that the worst of people are allowed to be exalted so that they may fulfill His purposes without their knowing it. He uses even the enemies of His people to discipline them in their disobedience. On the other hand, He can harden the hearts of His people's enemies so that they fall into His people's hands or even destroy themselves.

Tomorrow we will continue to discover God’s character exploring Part 2 of God Is In Control. Thank you for joining me on this trek called life. Encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of our Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.

God Never Changes - Wisdom Wednesday

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. Today is Day 781 of our trek, and it is Wisdom Wednesday. Due to a heavy travel and activity-filled schedule for the remainder of this week, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them.

As we continue with this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored that God Is Faithful. Today’s attribute is…

God Never Changes

Because God never changes...my future is secure and eternal.

"Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow," James 1:17.

You can count on God because He never changes. In fact, it is impossible for God to change. The influences that cause change in your life have no effect on God. He will never be stronger or weaker. He does not have mood swings. His knowledge and wisdom will not increase or diminish.

God's unchanging purpose gives you eternal significance. God's unchangeable ways assure you of unwavering guidance. God's unchanging Word equips you with timeless truth.

God's unchanging commitment guarantees you everlasting security. If you have trusted in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you can be assured of eternal life.

God's commitment to you is as strong as He is eternally constant. The storms of life change continually, but God remains the same. He is consistent and reliable. He is your anchor.

Life and its uncertainties may shake you, but God, the Rock of Ages, does not move. If you cling to Him, He will sustain you.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever," Hebrews 13:8.

For the next two days, we will explore the fact that God is in control. Thank you for joining me on this trek called life. Encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of our Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.

That will finish our trek for today. If you would like to listen to any of our past 780 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com. You can also subscribe to iTunes or Google Play so that each day’s trek will be downloaded automatically.

Due to a heavy travel and activity-filled schedule for the next three weeks, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them.

As we continue in this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored that God Is Merciful. Today’s attribute is...

God Is Faithful

Because God is faithful...I will trust Him to always keep His promises."O Lord God of Heaven's armies! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O Lord? You are entirely faithful," Psalm 89:8.

God is faithful to help you in your need. He will never fail you! He is reliable. He is trustworthy. Your holy and loving God is faithful!

God is faithful to forgive you even when you are unfaithful. Because you are still in a body of flesh, you have a tendency be unfaithful. How encouraging it is to remember God's promise, "If we are unfaithful, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself," 2 Timothy 2:13.

God is faithful to protect you from temptation. Remember, when you are tempted, do not focus on the attractiveness of the temptation, but on God's faithfulness to rescue you from that situation.

God is always faithful to keep His promises. He is ready and able to deliver all He has promised.

Faithfulness is at the heart of all that God is and does. His truthfulness, holiness, love, righteousness, and other attributes ensure His faithfulness. He is incapable of being otherwise.

"God can be trusted to keep His promise," Hebrews 10:23.

God Is Merciful – Meditation Monday

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 779 of our trek, and it is time for our segment called Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy.

For some, it may just be a time alone for quiet reflection. Some may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word, and in prayer. Due to a heavy travel and activity-filled schedule this week, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them. As we continue with this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Today’s attribute is…

God Is Merciful

Because God is merciful...He forgives me of my sins when I sincerely confess them.

"The Lord is full of tenderness and mercy," James 5:11.

God shows you mercy because He compassionately cares about you. The Bible is filled with examples of how Jesus was moved with compassion and acted to help those who were sick, suffering, and in need.

All humanity benefits from God's mercy to some degree. He demonstrates his mercy both by withholding punishment we so rightfully deserve and by showering us with blessings we do not deserve.

But God also has a sovereign mercy He shows to those who are His. To experience God's full mercy, we must repent of our sin and self-centeredness and accept God's forgiveness.

God wants us, in turn, to be merciful to others. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declared, "God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy," Matthew 5:7.

Your loving heavenly Father is committed to your well-being. Out of His great compassion, He generously bestows on you His grace and mercy.

"Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most," Hebrews 4:16.

As we start this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored that God Is Just. Today’s attribute is…

God Is Love

Because God is love...He is unconditionally committed to my well-being."This is real love--not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins," 1 John 4:10.

God's love is unconditional. It is not based on how good you are. He loves you because He is God and you are His creation.

God's love never fails. His love will not be terminated because of disappointment or a change of heart. He defines love, and He demonstrates what true love looks like - Jesus gave His life on your behalf.

We, in turn, are to love God wholeheartedly. God has created us to find our greatest joy and fulfillment in loving Him.

God also enables us to be channels of His supernatural love. On our own, we are incapable of loving as we should, but God has an unending supply of love. It is for us to claim, to enjoy, and to share with others.

When we begin to love God, love our neighbors as ourselves, and love our enemies, society will change for the better through the transforming power of God's love.

"Nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord," Romans 8:39.

God Is Just – Wisdom Unplugged

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 777 of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. Due to a heavy travel and activity-filled schedule for the next two weeks, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them.

As we start this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored that God Is Righteous. Today’s attribute is...

God Is Just

Because God is just...He will always treat me fairly."I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve," Jeremiah 17:10.

Because God is just, He will always treat you fairly.

Justice is a pillar of society, ensuring that the innocent are vindicated, and the guilty are punished. But all too often, this standard of justice is compromised for personal gain by corrupt judges and unscrupulous lawyers. Consequently, many people mistakenly believe they can manipulate God's system of justice. They think that God is fooled by their excuses and alibis.

However, as the holy and righteous sovereign of the universe, God cannot ignore any act of sin or self-centeredness. God hates sin with a holy passion. God's anger over sin should never be underestimated. But God also rewards right behavior. Although your salvation is secured by faith in Jesus Christ, your good works determine the rewards you will receive from Him.

We serve a just God, so what you do in this life will matter for eternity.

"God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad," Ecclesiastes 12:14.

God Is Righteous - Wisdom Wednesday

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. Today is Day 776 of our trek, and it is Wisdom Wednesday. Due to heavy travel and an activity-filled schedule for the next three to four weeks, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them.

As we start this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored that God Is Absolute Truth. Today’s attribute is…

God Is Righteous

Because God is righteous...I will live by His standards."The Lord is righteous in everything he does; he is filled with kindness," Psalm 145:17.

We live in an age where the distinction between right and wrong is becoming increasingly blurred. Our culture has adopted the principle of situational ethics, which proposes that what is morally right varies from person to person and situation to situation. Yet God's standards do not change; they are timeless.

God's laws are a reflection of His own righteous nature. Only by receiving Jesus as our Savior and Lord are we made righteous because we cannot keep God's perfect standard on our own.

However, God wants you to display His righteousness in your new life, but this is possible only as you consistently submit your will to the Holy Spirit and depend on Him to empower you.

As Christians, we must hold fast to the righteous standards set forth by the Sovereign Ruler of the universe. God will hold every person accountable. Whose standards of right are you following?

"Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith. He was even called the friend of God," James 2:23.

God Is Absolute Truth – Wisdom Unplugged

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 775 of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. Due to heavy travel and an activity-filled schedule for the next three weeks, our Wisdom-Trek episodes will be shorter so that I can pre-record them in advance of this time.

As we start this new year, I thought it would be good to invest this time discovering God and His key attributes. Yesterday we explored that God is holy. Today’s attribute is...

God Is Absolute Truth

Because God is absolute truth...I will believe what He says and live accordingly.

[Jesus said] "I was born and come into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true," John 18:37.

God wants us to know the truth. He gave us the Bible to help us understand the truth. He guides us into truth through the Holy Spirit.

God revealed the truth to us in the person of Jesus, who said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life," John 14:6. While many people claim to know the truth, only Jesus could honestly claim to be the truth.

God is the source of all truth because He is present everywhere, knows all things, and totally understands what is real, right, and true. Therefore, whatever He says is absolutely true.

God is our anchor in a society of relativism and falsehood. Do your actions demonstrate you have bought into the lies of popular culture? Or are you consistently discovering the truth in God's Word?

The truth will only be found by those who diligently and honestly seek it. Commit yourself daily to walk in the light of God's truth. God is the truth.

"Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth!" Psalm 86:11.
