    Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy
Welcome to Day 734 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.

    Outside Influences – Mindshift Monday

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 734 of our trek, and it is time for our Mindshift Monday series. Wisdom-Trek’s primary focus is to assist you in creating your living legacy.

Creating your living legacy can only be accomplished by gaining wisdom in many areas of life. You can only gain wisdom by changing what you allow to go into your mind which is a result of changing the way you think. In other words, to create your living legacy, you must choose to be in a continual mode of Mindshift. It is easy to get stuck in a mindset that your current circumstances cannot be changed. This is not true, but you must understand this fundamental principle: In order to change your life, you must change how you think and what you think about. Our Mindshift Monday podcast and journal will be to provide you practical ways to make a mindshift to a rich and satisfying life.

We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. Do you consider yourself an influential person? Who or what impacts your life choices and decisions the most? On our trek today, let’s look at…
    Outside Influences

Too many times we allow outward circumstances and influences to control our actions and mold our thinking. Too often we limit our happiness by submitting to the constant pressures all around us. It is vitally important to realize that either the situations around us control our lives, or we control them. For instance, we don’t need to wait until we are happy before we sing. We can sing to make us happy. Indeed, we can create our own environment. We can make our own bed in which we choose to lie down in. We truly can color our own world with the colors that we choose.

Have you ever known someone who could walk into a room full of people and within a few short moments completely change the atmosphere? How about the person who seemingly keeps their head above water while everyone else is drowning in confusion? Do you know people who, while others are bitter and critical, can smile and spread joy? What is their secret?

Those individuals have learned to control their situation instead of allowing outside influences to control them. They have realized that the outlook of their world largely depends on what is right, not what is easy or convenient. They have learned that while conditions may not always be favorable, they must color their own world the colors they would like to see.

The following characteristics are evident in positive influencers:

They face each day with internal joy and optimism regardless of external influences.
Their radiant lives draw others around them like a magnet.
They are doing while others are doubting.
They do not wait for favorable conditions to accomplish something worthwhile.
They always lift the spirits of those around them.
    They work while others worry.
They are always discovering more potential within their own lives.
They make things happen while others wait for things to happen.
The initiate good thinking and positive actions in an atmosphere that is prone to doubt and discouragement.
They seem lucky because they create their own luck through action.

Who or what influences you? Where are you right now? Are you sitting on a heap of ashes feeling sorry for yourself? Are you drowning in a pool of problems? Are you slowly being buried by the pressures of life? If so, it is time to pick up your own crayons, go to your life canvas, and start coloring your world the colors and picture you would like ...

Home Sweet Home - Ask Gramps

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 733 of our trek time for our Philosophy Friday series. Each Friday we will ponder some of the basic truths and mysteries of life and how they can impact us in creating our living legacy. As we continue on this trek called life sometimes we have questions about life so our Friday trek is a time where we can “Ask Gramps.”

Gramps will answer questions that you would like to ask your dad or granddad, but for whatever reason this is not possible. No matter how old you are, I know that all of us would like the opportunity to ask Dad or Gramps questions about life in many areas. We will address areas such as finances, relationships, health/fitness, business/work, home repairs/renovations, seasons of life, spiritual/Biblical questions, and any other areas that come our way.

As your fellow sojourner and mentor on this trek that we call life, it is my goal to provide you with practical wisdom and advice about any area of life. It is crucial that I receive a constant flow of questions, so please submit your questions to [email protected], send me a message at the bottom of any page on wisdom-trek.com, or text me at 740.350.5732. And I will answer your questions on our Friday podcast. I hope that this will become a highly interactive and informative time.

We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. When this episode is originally released, I will be in Mesa, Arizona, working with our partners on Phase II of the Mesa Townhome project. We are the general contractor for the funding group that is having the homes built, so we are able to see the progress from breaking ground through the final sale of the home. So I thought it would be appropriate to answer a question about home buying today.

“Hey Gramps, ‘We are looking to buy a home, should I apply for a 15- or 30-year mortgage?’”
    Home Sweet Home

Regardless of whether you are a first time homebuyer or a current homeowner looking to move to a new home, the same principles should apply. Let me share some background thoughts first before answering the question because they are so crucial to your decision.

First off is to make sure that you do not look to buy more of a home than you need. It is not necessary to buy a home with four bedrooms and 4 bathrooms for a family of four, especially if your budget will make it very tight. It is nice to have spare rooms for company and other purposes, but the fact is if you have to pay several hundred dollars more per month for a larger home, then it may not be a wise investment.

Second, do you have adequate reserves for a down payment? Most lending institutions require 10-20% down, and that money is not supposed to be borrowed from any other sources, including family. If you are able to purchase a home that appraises for 20% higher than the selling price, sometimes the down payment is waived. If you do not have an adequate down payment, it would be best to wait until you do. There are also several hundred or thousands of dollars in closing fees that need to be considered. Never use up all of your reserves to make a down payment, leave at least 1 to 2 months of income in an emergency fund. Unexpected expenses happen to all of us.

If you have credit card debt or significant student loans, use your reserves to pay those off before investing in a home. The only exception is if the student loan interest rates are very low, which is not the case in most instances. The actual interest paid on credit card bills is usually much higher than what is stated,

Any Kindness That I Can Show – Wisdom Unplugged

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 732 of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little additional content for today’s trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget.

Today’s quote is from William Penn, and it is, “I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
Any Kindness That I Can Show
Kindness is not an inconvenience to be avoided but a characteristic to be embraced.
Sometimes it is as simple as a pleasant smile, a warm handshake, sending a thank you note, assisting a neighbor with a household project, or being with a friend in distress. I have heard it said, “The greatest thing a man can do for his heavenly Father is to be kind to his other children.” Kindness originates from the heart of God. God is kind because he cannot be otherwise. It is essential to his nature. Likewise, that kindness becomes a part of our new nature, which comes to us through the Holy Spirit. Kindness becomes a part of our conduct because our character is rooted in God.

Kindness provides for other people’s needs. Kindness is more than a pat on the back while saying, “Have a nice day.” Kindness gets involved. It gets its hands dirty. It’s visible and active. It moves beyond the spiritual and the emotional to the physical and practical.

The watchword of today’s society is “Don’t get involved.” But at the heart of a kind person is involvement. They see the needs and seek to fill them. They are willing to risk in order to help others out. They know they can’t do everything, but they can do something.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 - See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. That’s a wrap for today’s Wisdom Unplugged. If you enjoy these quotes, I have created and published a searchable database of over 10,000 quotes that I have collected for many years. If you would like free access to my database of inspirational quotes, the link is available on the main page of Wisdom-Trek.com.

A Biblical Worldview Starting Point - Wisdom Wednesday

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. Today is Day 731 of our trek, and it is Wisdom Wednesday. We continue to explore new trails on how to gain wisdom through a Biblical Worldview this Wednesday. The first few weeks we will plot out what a Biblical Worldview is and why it is so important as a Christ follower to interpret life through the lenses of a Biblical Worldview.

Once we lay the foundation we will then look at current issues that impact our world and society and explore them through the lens of a Biblical Worldview, instead of our society, culture, modern media, or social media. I do not desire to tell you what to think, but teach you how to think so that you may be able to filter current issues and events through your Biblical Worldview. You may not always agree with my view, and that is okay. I am open to any comments that you may have on the subjects that we explore.

We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. When this trek originally airs, I will be heading back to Arizona for a week as we continue ramping up Phase II of our Mesa Townhome project. The scope and magnitude of the project are formidable with a lot of details which we need to focus on to keep the project on schedule.

When Hazel returned to Children’s Hospital last week, her blood counts had dropped again, so they delayed her next round of chemo treatments until this week. She will be tested locally to ensure her counts are high enough before heading back. It is our prayer that she is able to continue with these treatments on a timely basis, so it does not extend her overall regimen any longer than required.

Last week on our Wisdom Wednesday we explored how to shape a Biblical Worldview, and today we will extend that subject and focus on what the starting point is when shaping a Biblical Worldview. If you missed listening to the last two weeks, it would be good to go back to Day 721 and Day 726. So today we will explore…
    A Biblical Worldview Starting Point

We ended last week with the foundation of a Biblical Worldview, which comes from the Apostles Creed and says, “We believe in God, creator of heaven and earth.” A worldview must offer a way to live that is consistent with reality by offering a comprehensive understanding of all areas of life and thought, every aspect of creation.

As we said earlier, the starting point for a Biblical worldview brings us into the presence of God without delay. The central affirmation of Scripture is not only that there is a God but that God has acted and spoken in history. God is Lord and King over this world, ruling all things for his own glory, displaying his perfections in all that he does so that humans and other heavenly beings may worship and adore him.

God is triune; there are within the Godhead three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The concept of the Trinity was not fully understood until Christ was bodily present on earth. Even today for some it is difficult to grasp the concept of one God manifested in three aspects.

To think wrongly about God is idolatry. Thinking rightly about God is eternal life, which John 17:3 explains, "And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth." Thinking rightly about God should be the believer’s life objective. We can think rightly about God because he is knowable, at least to the extent we can comprehend through His Spirit that resides within us. 1 Corinthians 2:11 puts it this way, "No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit,

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 730 of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little additional content for today’s trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:

Today’s quote is from John Maxwell, and it is, "All persons live in one of two tents, content or discontent. In which do you live?"
Which Tent Do You Live In?

The contented person looks beyond circumstances and sees a better day; the discontented person looks at the circumstances and sees no other way.

The contented person understands the purpose for which he was born; the discontented person looks at others’ success with a face filled with scorn.

The contented person has surrendered to a purpose that demands his best; the discontented person has selfishly hoarded much and, grasping for more, will not rest. The contented person has placed his values on things that will forever last; the discontented person has placed his values on things that will soon be past.

The contented person is anchored to clear goals and is hardly every swayed; the discontented person has no goals to anchor him and is usually dismayed.

The contented person counts his blessings and names them one by one; the discontented person counts others’ blessings and thinks that he will have no fun.

As the Apostle Paul wrote to his protégé Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:7-8, "After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content."All persons live in one of two tents - content or discontent. In which tent do you live?

What's Your Problem? – Mindshift Monday

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 729 of our trek, and it is time for our Mindshift Monday series. Wisdom-Trek’s primary focus is to assist you in creating your living legacy. Creating your living legacy can only be accomplished by gaining wisdom in many areas of life.

You can only gain wisdom by changing what you allow to go into your mind, which is a result of changing the way you think.

Have you ever met anyone who does not have problems in their life? No, I haven’t either. Now I have met some that seemed to have so many problems that “if it weren’t for bad luck, they’d have no luck at all.” They seem to go from one drama to the next, but no one has to live that way. So let me ask you…
    What’s Your Problem?

Problems are many things to many people, but let’s look at it through the eyes of those people that successfully handle problems on a consistent basis. Problems are predictors. They forecast the future by exposing areas of potential weakness.

How you react to difficulties when they begin to surface will determine where you and the problems will be tomorrow. No trial will leave you as the same person that you are today. The decisions we make today concerning the problems that face us will shape our future. This requires that we are in a continual mindshift mode to most effectively handle these problems.

Remember, the circumstances in which we find ourselves today are a direct reflection of the decisions that we made yesterday. The decisions that we make are a direct reflection of what we allow to enter into our mind.
    · Problems Are Reminders
They remind us that we need God’s help to handle the upheavals of life. The Apostle Paul realized if he had the thought “I can do everything” that it would be an arrogant and improper mindset which would have caused problems. Instead, he knew the truth as he wrote to in Philippians 4:13, "For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Paul knew the secret of success was much more than self-confidence, but Christ-confidence. His achievements could only come through Christ, and he succeeded because in every problem he remembered the truth.
    · Problems Are Obstacles
Problems frustrate us while we attempt to reach specific objectives or goals. For instance, a baby or toddler handles most obstacles by crying or whining. Some adults never outgrow that phase as they will pout, quit, blame someone else, or just ignore the entire situation. Others will come up with solutions on how to eliminate the problem, or at least work around them in order to keep moving forward. Regardless of our reaction to a problem for a time, it is an obstacle on our trek of life.

    · Problems Are Blessings
Problems will refine us until the dross of our frailty burns off and we become stronger on our trek through life. A smooth trail never makes a skillful hiker. Problems help to keep us alert and sharp. Otherwise, we will become complacent and unmotivated. A few problems and tensions can be good for us,

Trials and Tribulations - Ask Gramps

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 728 of our trek, and it is time for our Philosophy Friday series. Each Friday we will ponder some of the basic truths and mysteries of life and how they can impact us in creating our living legacy.

Last week we started on a new trek called“Ask Gramps.” This is a time where Gramps will answer questions that you would possibly like to ask your dad or granddad, but for whatever reason are unable to. No matter how old you are, I know that all of us would like the opportunity to ask Dad or Gramps questions about life in all areas.

We will address areas such as finances, relationships, health/fitness, business/work, home repairs/renovations, seasons of life, spiritual/Biblical questions, and any others areas that come our way. I will answer your questions on our Friday podcast. I hope that this will become a highly interactive and informative time.

We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. We all face hardships at times, and our life’s trek can be steep and winding with many obstacles along the path. So here is our question for today:

“Hey Gramps, ‘Why does God allow us to go through trials and tribulations?’”
    Trials and Tribulations

This is one question that has certainly gone through my mind several times during this year. One of the most difficult parts of the Christian life is the fact that becoming a disciple of Christ does not make us immune to life’s trials and tribulations. The question still comes to mind, though, “Why would a good and loving God allow us to go through such things as Hazel getting leukemia, or me breaking my femur bone in a freak accident, or a grown child losing the job which causes financial hardships, worry, and fear?” Surely, if God loved us, He would take all these things away from us. After all, doesn’t loving us mean He wants our lives to be easy and comfortable?

Well, no, it doesn’t. God’s ultimate purpose for His children is to mold them into being an image bearer for Him. An often misrepresentation of Romans 8:28 is that “all things work together for good.” To us “good” is often thought of as what we desire or what we think is best for us. A closer look at Romans 8:28 shows, "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them."

So that must mean that the trials and tribulations God allows in our lives, He causes or shapes those circumstances that will allow us to mature as the bearers of His image.

As in all things, God’s ultimate purpose for us is to grow more and more like His Son, which continues in Romans 8:29-30, "For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.  And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory."

This is the goal of the Christian, and everything in life, including the trials and tribulations, is designed to enable us to reach that goal. It is part of the process of being set apart for God’s purposes and fit...

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 727 of our trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little additional content for today’s trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget.

Today’s quote is from an unknown author, and it is, "Yesterday is like a canceled check. Tomorrow is a promissory note. Today is like ready cash. Use it wisely, for today is the most precious possession you can have."
    Today Is Like Ready Cash
There is absolutely nothing that we can do about yesterday, other than applying the lessons that we have learned. No one is guaranteed that they will be alive tomorrow.  We need to prepare, but not obsess over it.

Today is all that we have. We need to invest our time and resources today so that they will have the greatest impact on others and on our potential tomorrows. We must use the moments that we have today as wisely as possible to maximize their impact on the lives of others.

Too often we dwell on the past with either regret or in unrealistic yearning for the "good old days." We yearn for the future as if it will be the cure-all for all of the problems that we face today. We should forget that which is behind and press forward to our tomorrows, but with the realistic expectation that we can only make an impact today.

Yes, we should plan and hope for the future, but we cannot dwell there when there is work to be done and an impact to be made today. Do what you know is right for today.  As James the half-brother of Jesus tells us in his letter James 4:13-17, "Look here, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.' How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.' What you ought to say is, 'If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.' Otherwise, you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. Remember, it is a sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it."That’s a wrap for today’s Wisdom Unplugged. How to Shape a Biblical Worldview? - Wisdom Wednesday

Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. Today is Day 726 of our trek, and it is Wisdom Wednesday. We continue to explore new trails on how to gain wisdom this week.

Starting last week our focus is on how we can explore our trek of life through a Biblical Worldview. The first few weeks we will plot out what a Biblical Worldview is and why it is so important to interpret life through the lenses of a Biblical Worldview as a Christ follower. Once we lay the foundation, we will then look at current issues that impact our world and society and explore them through the lens of a Biblical Worldview, instead of the lens of modern media or social media.

I do not desire to tell you what to think, but teach you how to think, so that you may be able to filter current issues and events through your Biblical Worldview. You may not always agree with my view, and that is okay. I am open to any comments that you may have on the subjects that we explore.

We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. The cool fall weather and cold fall rains are upon us this week. The majority of the leaves are hanging on tight, though, so it looks like it will be late leaf harvest this year. With many mature walnut, maple, and oak trees on our over three acres of lawn, picking up all the leaves is similar to a small harvest. It is great to get out and enjoy fall in this manner.

After over a week in isolation, Hazel’s test of varicella virus (which is the vaccine given for chicken pox) came back negative, so as long as her blood count remains high, then she will start on her next round of chemo this week. It is our prayer that she is able to continue with these treatments, so it does not extend her overall regimen any longer than required.

Last week on our Wisdom Wednesday we explored what a Biblical Worldview is. If you missed listening to it, it would be good to go back to Day 721. Today we will explore…
How to Shape a Biblical Worldview?
A Chinese proverb says, “If you want to know what water is, don’t ask the fish.” Water is the sum and substance of the world in which the fish is immersed. The fish may not reflect on its own environment until suddenly it is thrust onto dry land, where it struggles for life. Then it realizes that water provided its sustenance.

As I mentioned last week, everyone has a worldview. We are immersed in our culture and environment, and because of this, we have failed to take the ramifications of a secular worldview seriously. I am sure it is the same for other countries, but in the United States, we also need to be careful that we do not accept the culture and societies worldview as a Biblical Worldview.

Every culture has its own coherent set of answers to the questions of why we are here and what is our purpose for life. Cultures and societies change over time, so a secular worldview is not constant. A Biblical worldview is based on the unchanging truths and precepts in God’s Word.

What is at stake is how we understand the world in which we live. An example is how a culture or society views the sanctity of human life. Over time a society or culture may vary its view on the unborn, the sick, the aged, or a certain ethnic subsector of society. If you have a secular worldview based on societal norms and values, then there may be a strong conflict between that and a Biblical worldview as a Christ follower. You cannot have both.

These issues are worldview issues. Christ followers should recognize there is a great spiritual battle raging for the hearts ...

  • Day 725 – Courage Is the Foundation – Wisdom Unplugged
    Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy
Welcome to Day 725 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.
This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom
Courage Is the Foundation – Wisdom Unplugged

Hello, my friend, and welcome to Wisdom-Trek! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your Guide to Wisdom and Creating a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 725 of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little additional content for today’s trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget.

Today’s quote is from Keshavan Nair, and it is, "With courage, you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity."
    Courage Is the Foundation
Courage is the very basis for a life well lived. Courage is the opposite of selfishness because you are willing to put what is right ahead of what you desire. Integrity is built on that foundation of courage because it provides you with the strength to always do what is right instead of what is convenient. Courage provides strength to love others, even if they are unlovable.

Courage provides the wisdom to be humble when you would be prone to swell up with pride. Courage allows you to risk the comfortable, for the uncomfortable. Courage requires faith that if we do what is right at all times that God will provide us with the strength needed when our strength begins to fail. As the Apostle Paul encouraged us in Corinthians 16:13-14, "Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.  And do everything with love."That’s a wrap for today’s Wisdom Unplugged quote.
