Ed was a kid who loved poetry, music and art. But when you have parents who grew up without electricity or running water, a career as a broke artist isn’t a path they want for their son. Luckily, the entrepreneurial seed was planted early when found success in high school selling custom-made accessories. Attending an HBCU gave him more than a nickname - it gave him the pride, perseverance, and power he needed to get through a rigorous master’s degree in human behavior. Ed was prepared to take the corporate world by storm. The corporate world had other plans. By then, the entrepreneurial seed sprouted and he created For Love Coaching to give people the tools to help them better understand themselves and their upbringing so they can find (healthy) love in dating and in dating after divorce.
Oh, and he is divorced.

Meredith Steele thought she was going to take her college degree and become a historical fiction writer, a job that would certainly make her librarian mother proud. But Life is going to Life, and Meredith went from working in restaurants to being scouted for a job she'd never heard of to seeing her 'for funsies' TikTok account go from 2,000 followers to 50,000 in one day. Through her growing content creation business, Babies of Steele, Meredith has found that people come to her page for the funny; but they stay to see a woman verbally process her mental health, her almost 200-pound body (gasp!), and life that Pinterest did not build. Oh, and she leveraged her followers to help send 40 LGBTQ+ and allied teens to a weeklong overnight leadership camp, called New Leaders Project.

October 25, 2022 I Would Rather Be Straight Than Have Anxiety with Vickto_Willy
Victoria Williams has always carved her own path, but made sure she created one that others could follow. She started playing tennis when she was 6 years old, when a coach took notice of her talent and took extra initiative to develop her skills. It was a bit of an escape from the rough area she lived with her family, but it also made her a bit of an "other" between her two lives. That was part of the reason she selected an HBCU, where she could be the first of her siblings to attend college. While a degree in medical field was stable, it did not feed her creative side. Enter social media, where she could stretch those muscles and find a way toward a new career -- a career that let's her tell her stories her way. A career that lets people see that a queer, Black, Millennial, managing her anxiety and a beautiful relationship is thriving. Oh, and she organized a protest.

Tayne is a brand manager in product marketing. Ade works in communications for the government. Born to Nigerian parents who were supportive (but not psycho) about their educations; they each earned master's degrees. These very accomplished women also happen to love reality TV shows and created "Altar Call: A Married at First Sight Podcast". At its core, their podcast is two friends who are rooting for love, but side-eyeing the foolishness along the way. They deep dive into the psychology of the contestants, the impact of the "experts" on these legally binding marriages, show ratings, and a "Where Are They Now" of past participants. They join me to talk about the real work that goes into putting out a just-for-fun podcast when one of you is Type A and has a hard and fast rule about podcasts that open with idle host banter, and other is super organized but would still like to outsource some aspects of the job. The three of us meander from Married at First Sight (MAFS) to the challenges Bravo is currently facing with race, why "Love is Blind" had an impeccable first season, and a tiny teaser about the upcoming season of MAFS in their hometown of Houston, TX. Oh, and I learn why Yvonne Orji's impersonation of her parents' Nigerian accent is a little annoying.

When he was a kid, Jacquis Neal turned his mother's laundry basket into a podium and an empty toilet paper roll into a microphone. He was an entertainer before he could explain what an entertainer was. Jacquis grew up on the tougher side of Chicago, where being signed to a label and a run-in with the law eventually led him to theater. He found he was comfortable on stage and happy when he had a script. Equal parts WuTang and Oliver Twist, Jacquis discovered he could be successful and be himself at the same damn time. Now he is an actor, podcaster, comedian, voiceover artist, reluctant writer and all-around entertainer who knows no one can succeed in show business without understanding that it is a business. And that he can be funny without hurting marginalized groups. And that entertainers DO have supportive and loving families. Oh, and we both love MTVs “The Challenge”.
