  • 42: How Music Can Transform The Way We Learn with Stevie Van Zandt & David Roth
APPLY FOR THE 2020 WISE AWARDS: bit.ly/2t5Vqsw
    -----------------------------------------------------
"The success of what we do has to do with teaching kids HOW to think instead of WHAT to think, and that is something that the arts does best." It is impossible to deny the universal capacity of music to touch the souls of millions around the world. So why have we not used it as a gateway to learning in the classroom? This is exactly what world renowned musician and actor/producer, Steven Van Zandt, set out to achieve with the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation and TeachRock.org. Joining alongside Steven is the Chairman of the Rock and Roll Foundation, David Roth. "The arts inspire and engage. Music engages you, it engages your soul. It engages you to your very core. That is exactly the goal we have for every classroom".
After 12 years of building a curriculum on the foundations of music, TeachRock is now offering over 150 lessons entirely for free. Currently, there are more than 25,000 teachers registered on the platform despite only going public in 2018. CEO of WISE, Stavros Yiannouka, sits down with Steven and David to talk about turning STEM into STEAM, what it means to be human, and what Steven has learned from his illustrious career as an artist.

  • 40: Before High Tech High with Larry Rosenstock
Founding Principal of High Tech High and the seventh WISE Prize for Education laureate, Larry Rosenstock, reminisces previous experiences throughout his life and how those experiences inspired him to create an innovative network of American charter schools.
Larry is recognized for his lifelong dedication to rethinking K-12 learning and tackling inequality through education. He has pioneered the concept of project-based education – the idea that students can and must learn crucial academic skills through hands-on projects that integrate multiple disciplines, engage their interest, and have an authentic purpose. His model also reimagines the role of teachers as “designers” who adapt their curricula and blend a variety of subjects based on the specific needs of each student.

  • 39: Can Tech Accelerate Early Learning? with Dimitri Christakis
"We found that the typical 2 year old spends, on average, 20-30 minutes a day with their favorite toy. And we know that children will happily spend way more time with an iPad than they would with any traditional toy. If we think of these things as toys, they are not functioning the way any other toy has for millennia."
The introduction of technology as a tool for learning has always been a point of controversy among parents and researchers alike. Dr. Dimitri Christakis sits down with us to discuss the many implications of what technology can mean for the future of education and early childhood cognitive development.
He is a pediatrician, researcher, a parent, the George Adkins Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington, Director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children’s Research Institute, and an attending pediatrician at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
He is the author of over 230 original research articles, a textbook of pediatrics and The Elephant in the Living Room: Make Television work for your kids. (September 2006; Rodale). In 2010 he was awarded the Academic Pediatric Association Research Award for outstanding contributions to pediatric research over his career. He was also a speaker at the WISE 2019 Summit.

  • 38: Thinking Exponentially with Jason Silva
"Technology is advancing exponentially - that is the reason why the smartphone in your pocket today is a million times cheaper, smaller, and a thousand times more powerful than what used to be a 60 million dollar supercomputer 40 years ago."
World-renowned filmmaker and futurist, Jason Silva, joins us to discuss why human beings should unlearn linear thinking and relearn exponential thinking in the digital age. Jason is known for hosting the National Geographic Emmy-Nominated reality series, Brain Games, and for his insightful YouTube series, “Shots of Awe,” in which he explores various aspects of the human condition through philosophical micro-documentaries.

  • 33: Flipping Classrooms with Robert Talbert
Robert Talbert, Professor and Assistant Chair in the Mathematics Department at Grand Valley State University, joins this episode to discuss everything to do with flipped learning.
Robert wrote the book: Flipped Learning: A Guide for Higher Education Faculty, published by Stylus Publications in May 2017.
"I wrote this book because I've been teaching with flipped learning for a while (since 2009) and writing about it on my blog for about the same amount of time. During that time I've made a lot (!) of mistakes and figured a lot of things out. I wanted to collect everything I know about flipped learning --- along with some research, theoretical foundations, history, and practical examples --- and put it in one volume. I'm convinced that flipped learning is the way of the future in higher education and I want to give faculty in all walks of higher ed a handbook for how to get started and keep going." - Robert Talbert
