The unexpected overturning of Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey by the Supreme Court is rightly being celebrated as a political and moral victory. But it is important to understand what this decision actually achieves. In terms of immediate effect, this decision does little to change the net number of abortions performed in the United States, but this is not a fundamentally bad thing. By acknowledging that the Constitution does not provide a fundamental right to abortion and returning the decision to the people, a new type of discourse is now possible - one where the actual underlying moral issues that cause abortion can be discussed and addressed and where new laws that were previously considered impossible can now be considered.
