This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss Live From DRKMTTR Listening Party & Tape Swap happening this Saturday with Billy Campbell, who produced and engineered the record.
Bootgaze, freak folk, whatever you want to call it, it’s no secret country-leaning indie rock is having a major moment. So much so, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to stand out in the ever-growing popular “genre.” Chicago’s Ratboys met that challenge with their most transformative record yet. Recruiting acclaimed indie rock producer Chris Walla, The Window combines the perfect amount of twang and punchy riffs to create swelling, cinematic moments that the settle into comforting, front porch-sitting familiarity.
Watch Ratboys perform “It’s Alive,” “Black Earth, WI” and “Country” live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral here.
More than 20 years into the Iron & Wine project, 2024 finds singer-songwriter Sam Beam having released both a new studio album, 'Light Verse,' and a concert documentary film, 'Who Can See Forever.' Beam stopped by WNXP studios to discuss creative momentum and the importance in taking risks even though life, as he says in the documentary's trailer, has "no safety ropes." The Iron & Wine 'Light Verse' tour stops at Ryman Auditorium on Saturday, August 24.
They’ve been dubbed post-punk, but that doesn’t quite encompass what Brighton’s Squid is capable of. Drummer and singer Ollie Judge has gone on the record calling the quintet’s sound “some sort of twisted, 21st-century jazz,” pairing rock guitars with classical and jazz instrumentation. It’s chaotic and frenetic, but intentional. Their latest LP O Monolith showcases exactly that. Regardless of its lack of “genre,” everything Squid does is expansive and all-consuming. It’s bigger than the sound they create. It’s a work of art.
Watch Squid perform “Fugue (Bin Song),” “Undergrowth” and “Swing (In A Dream)” live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral here.
This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss Eastside Jam, happening every Sunday at Inglewood Lounge in East Nashville, with Jody Lee. Lee is the drummer and organizer of the event.
Fana Hues started her career as a musician at two years old. "Moth" shows her expertise, blending serious song craft into pop R&B bangers. We talked to her on the balcony of The Ryman before her performance at the Mother Church.
This week for What Where When-sday, we sit down with Emma Supica to discuss “The East Nashville Facebook Page: The Musical” happening this Saturday at Riverside Revival.
This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss The Sweetness of Life Culinary Experience/Family Ice Cream Social taking place this Saturday at the Frist Arts Museum with Lokelani Alabanza of Saturated Ice Cream.
Remi Wolf grew leaps and bounds between the release of her 2021 debut Juno (which she made entirely in bedrooms during COVID times) and this summer’s launch of sophomore record Big Ideas. This period represented near-constant touring, and writing in short spurts when home in California, as the artist grappled with surging through her mid-twenties while simultaneously becoming an indie pop star.
She said, "Along with it came so many new feelings. Of loneliness, isolation, community, love, friendship, confusion about my own identity, confusion about relationships. It was all a big whirlwind.” Hear Remi Wolf talk about the collaborative new record and some of her influences in this discussion.
This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss NashFeels. The popular, social event highlights genres from hip-hop and R&B to Reggae and Afrobeats. It will be celebrating its 6th year with two nights at Brooklyn Bowl on Friday and Saturday. I spoke with the headliner for night one, Nashville rapper Starlito, and co-founder D’Llisha Davis.
