Greek “eirene” = equivalent to Hebrew “shalom”
Wholeness, completeness, tranquility unaffected by outward pressure
Peace produces calm, stability and prosperity of soul
1. Purpose of Peace
A) Peace prevents a troubled heart (Luke 10:38–42 NKJV)
B) Peace determines direction - “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body and be thankful.” Colossians 3:15 NKJV
“Rule” = act as umpire, deciding what is in or out of bounds. When peace lifts, you have stepped out of God’s will.
C) Peace gives you safety and rest - Psalm 4.8 - 8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Matthew 11.28-29 - 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
2. Christ is the source of Peace
John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
2 Corinthians 13.11 - 11 Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
Galatians 5.22 - 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness
